May Day

On May Day 1559, a company of people gathered at Westminster in boats opposite the palace began throwing eggs and oranges at each other. Some set fire to squibs, one of which fell on a barrel of gunpowder and nearly caused the deaths of several persons. By good fortune, only one was drowned.
