I scream, you scream

A sample of ice cream tested in 1881 contained cotton, insects, human hair and cat hair. Ice cream was particularly prone to contamination because owners of ice cream shops stirred their ice cream with their bare hands and arms. Even after the turn of the century, one report counted 50 million bacteria per cubic centimeter of ice cream. In Philadelphia, 80% of ice cream sampled tested positive for streptococci bacteria.
