A friend sent this to me. It's 5 years old, and from the language, I assume it took place in Portugal. My apologies to anyone who posted it back when it happened. It just seems SO relevant today (unfortunately).
Some fan at a soccer game got a little too enthusiastic, ran onto the playing field, and the rent-a-cops ran after him. But instead of just removing him from the field, they got him on the ground and proceeded to beat the shit out of him. This was too much for the players and the fans, who then rushed the field and started to give the "security" guys a taste of their own medicine, and then chased them away:
This wouldn't happen in the States without about least 30 fatalities, since everyone is armed, but at least it shows that in some circumstances, the public will not stand for excessive brute force in the name of "security."

Obviously one referee doesn't have a lot of authority against four burly guys with billy clubs. Add other referees, both teams of players and a large number of enraged fans, and the "security" guys start to look a little less confident that they were going about their jobs properly.

(54,426 posts)At least one time, in one place, a crowd saw someone getting ganged up on by a bunch of uniformed thugs, and spontaneously jumped out to not only save the victim, but let the thugs know in no uncertain terms what the public thought of their behavior. In the States they keep their distance and take pictures with their cell phones because any other action would probably result in a slaughter.
