Santa Cruz Chef Says Restaurant Employees Were Ordered to Pour Bleach On Baby Opossum

http://patch.com/california/santacruz/santa-cruz-chef-says-he-quit-because-he-would-not-pour-beach-kill-baby-opossum

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is investigating claims that a pizza restaurant owner ordered an employee to kill a baby opossum on Saturday, according to Rebecca Dmytryk of Wildlife Emergency Service....

He says he came into work Saturday, and found two employees standing next to a garbage can with the baby opossum inside.

The employees had been told to kill the animal by pouring bleach on it, according to Pena.

“I immediately freaked out,” Pena said. “It was a baby, and the sweetest looking guy on the planet.”

I think I'll go with the veggie.

Not sure who gets the blame, employees may well be undocumented but anyone, especially in this town, knows damn well that all critters are sacred and there are agencies ready to take care of any wandering furkids.

I'm in the county, not the city proper.

Sad Jose! That's a new one!

I'll send a PM, neighbor!

The animal hospital where I used to take my dog is the wildlife rescue place for the area. I was once waiting when a ranger came in to pick up three baby squirrels who had been brought in that morning.

Welcome to DU, blackcrowflies!

on the opossum. However, to those who are not aquainted with opossums, the babies look like rats. I don't think a rat should be doused with bleach either, but there are not many details in this story.

A man was cited for animal cruelty for allegedly pouring bleach on an opossum that he was trying to get rid of at a Santa Cruz pizzeria where he had worked, authorities said Friday.

Alan Thomas Rockwood, 31, of Santa Cruz admitted he poured bleach on a 6-month-old female opossum last Saturday after it was found rummaging at South Beach Pizza at 303 Beach St. Rockwood was fred from the restaurant after the incident, authorities said.

Another employee of the pizza shop brought the injured opossum to Native Animal Rescue in Santa Cruz, where it died. Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter officers picked up the animal.

A veterinarian conducted a necropsy, or animal autopsy, and concluded that the opossum had died of pneumonia as a result of having bleach poured on it, said animal control Officer Todd Stosuy.
