More than half of the cashiers I pay with money (as opposed to plastic) give me change by placing paper money and receipt in my hand and then trying to place the coins on top of that.
THIS IS A PRACTICE STEMMING FROM CEREBRAL CORRUPTION! One out of three times the coins (some or all) fall on the floor. Handing coins first followed by the paper is a VASTLY superior method.
Before the advent of digital cash registers, this was common. For example, a $10 bill is tendered for a $8.32 transaction. The cashier would take 3 pennies to make $8.35, then a nickle to make $8.40, a dime to make $8.50 and finally 2 quarters which would total $9. The cashier then handed you the coins and added a paper dollar to make the total $10, the amount tendered.
Is anyone else annoyed by this careless coin handling?

(23,272 posts)Have you noticed the change that accumulates on the pavement? I notice it every time I go thru the drive-up. Quite a haul.... I think folks just say "aw fuggedaboutit" and leave the .34 on the ground. That adds up!
Then the cashier gets to swoop in and grab the booty at the end of their shift.

(18,479 posts)...a slightly narrower annoyance base. I say greater magnitude because handling a bag of food, a receipt, a drink (or two), coins and bills with my left hand (I'm a righty) is extra annoying. (Note - it's not as bad in multi-window drive thru.) Some fast food huts have only minimal protection from adverse weather. Like the idea of feeling around in the snow for a quarter???
What about ordering $4 worth of chicken nuggets? They pump those things out like gasoline; why can't we order them the same way?

I will pick up my fallen change, and I carry cash, so the two "No" options don't apply to me.

(8,217 posts)It is part of the training of cashiers and it is easier to do mentally.
I don't consider this as any sort of insiduous scheme to have people let go of a few coins.
It is just far easier to count from large going to small.
So I don't see this as careless coin handling.
I guess I'll place this as one of those things I don't think about.
Though, you might be right. I just don't really carry cash much any more either.

(18,479 posts)I have a standard human hand. I'm able to ergonomically hold coins in my palm and three fingers while my thumb and index finger grasp the bills. Making the job easier for a mental midget is annoying.
Is it careless? No, not at all; it's thoughtless.
If the way the cashier hands me my change cause me to drop the coins, the cashier can retrieve the coins or replace what they dropped out of the drawer. Aside from that making change is basically a two step process; first step - paper, second step - coins.
Count them in any order you want but hand the coins first, please.
Thanks for the thoughts.

(8,217 posts)Still, I have no problems bending over to pick up coins.
I guess I can understand your frustration, even if I don't really experience it.
So, I'll trust you with this one.

(18,479 posts)...I feel more a hindrance being in the way of the line trying to pick up coins while holding my purchases, bills and wallet. I suppose it's just another example of those with a black AmEx cards not caring about the rest of us.

If they get that wrong, just ask for 2 twenties for a ten.

(34,136 posts)While recovering from them. I did my dominant hand first so for a month I had my most capable hand in a splint and my really messed up hand free. There were a few cashiers who figured it out or asked how I wanted my change.
When I had the surgery on the other hand, they had to transplant tendon in the thumb joint to replace the worn out cartilage - the thumb had to be splinted for nearly two months. At leas the other hand worked good! My most favorite cashier was at a drive through window. I drove up, handed her a bill - she took a look at my hand in the rig, then gave me my order in one bag and my change in another.
Now I can pick up coins again with both hands so it's not as bad as it used to be!

(4,033 posts)I refuse the bills & constantly say to the cashier "change first". This occurs because the register tells the cashier what amount needs to be given to the customer, so if it's $7.41, the cashier literally gives you back the $7 then the 41 cents on top.

(7,347 posts)and can deal with how they hand me back change...What I've seen is cashiers struggle if I give them, say $6.04 for a $5.79 purchase. I just want to get rid of my pennies, businesses are the ones who give me them in the first place!
discntnt_irny_srcsm
(18,479 posts)...while others just enter $6.04 and the register reads $0.25 and they hand me the quarter.

(7,720 posts)This migh make me seem old, but I still like it when the cashier counts back my change to me in cash and coins. That only happens with older cashiers, hell, they're usually older than me. (I pay cash for most transactions under $50 - $100).
discntnt_irny_srcsm
(18,479 posts)...I was appalled that a cashier was unable to calculate sales tax on a single item bought when his register was down.
I can still see his "Dustin" name tag.

(18,479 posts)The thoughtful cashier usually pours the coins on top of the bills.
Try that 2 handed thing in the drive thru, btw, you'll get some novel glances.

(20,176 posts)I couldn't care less if they fuck up the change or I drop some but you make them do change first and they fuck up the cash and that's all I care about. So, as long as you kvetch about getting this changed, I'm going to rally for the status-quo.
discntnt_irny_srcsm
(18,479 posts)...they look at the display that reads $6.52 and take out a $5 bill, a $1 bill, 2 quarters and 2 pennies. Then they park the bills in my hand and pour the coins on top.
I don't give a damn what order they pull it from the drawer, just hand me the coins first, then the paper.
How difficult is that?
Chan790
(20,176 posts)As long as they're doing it that way, I don't care about order.
Another issue I encountered having worked retail and teller under camera, some places though require employees to make and give change in a specific way so that it's standardized and can be tracked on camera. These places tend to be retailers like Burger King or WalMart more often than higher-end retailers.
The bank I used to work for required me to count money one bill at a time from the drawer to the counter (for camera capture), recount it while recording the amounts in the computer, then count it out-loud a third time into the pay-slot or client's hands. Then we did the change separately and that only required one count--from the coin-tray to the computer and hand it to the client completely separately from the bills. (some seconds apart actually.) It all had to be camera captured and I was also responsible for making sure the client looked up or forward during the transaction for at least 2 seconds so that their face was captured by the camera. (There's also a camera usually right near the door of the bank close to eye-level so they can catch the face of everybody entering or leaving.)

(8,028 posts)...that they don't count it back, or, if they do, they count it back in the wrong order. Unless I've already mentally calculated how much change they owe me, it always throws me off.
