Farmers Markets are amazing...

Raleigh has a pretty large one - spent an hour there this morning, came home with purple sweet potatoes, big stack of collards, big bag of washed kale, two bunches of beets (with greens - 2.00 each!), big bunch of leeks (2.00!), a bunch of fresh ginger (smelled so good!), some local apples (1.29 per pound - Mutsu and York Imperial), three pound jar of local honey for 12.00, sweet onions, red potatoes, end of the year zucchini. getting it all into the fridge was interesting - and now I've got to choreograph this week's meals so everything lasts (added cauliflower and a whole stalk of brussels sprouts from Trader Joe on the way home).

(and you will note in not a single place did I use the word "tomato"!)

Great time of the year to be meandering through the markets, that's for sure!

Have a great weekend, DUers!

I am really sad. No more corn, beans, squash, TOMATOES and all the other fresh vegetables that I enjoyed all summer. Just used the last brussel sprouts and squash the other day.

It was so easy to put together a meal when all I had to do was come up with a main entree and had too many vegetables to choose from to complete the menu. Looking in the freezer for an inventory of frozen veggies yesterday, made it all too real.

I have two indoor farmer's markets in the general area but they basically just sell the same produce you get at the supermarket.
The seasonal one actually has a local farmer that grows his stuff and sells you what is ready that week. It is wonderful to get produce that hasn't been sitting for a few weeks in a warehouse somewhere; tastes completely different. I will miss it.

the one around here is seasonal (summer, maybe fall) and on saturdays only--from way too early until noon or 1pm (something stupid like that--which is why i've never been.)

The food looks really good. When I'm working again, I'll go there more often.

Prices in Raleigh are half of what the Carrboro market is - they tend to price to cater to the local clientele, it seems.

I'm about to walk over there.

I'll get Hood River apples today, and some greens and fingerling potatoes.

It's my favorite time of week, browsing the market and seeing all the happy children and neighbors.
