For DC//NOVA/Maryland PBS Masterpiece Mystery fans,

Maryland Public Television, channel 22 in the DC area, I think, will be showing the PBS Masterpiece Mystery Series "Inspector George Gently" starting tomorrow on Saturdays at 7 pm. The show until a couple of weeks ago was shown on one of the WETA 26 digital channels. I'm thrilled to see it back.

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, it is set in the 1960s in northeastern England. It weaves '60s themes with the relationship of an old-school WWII vet detective inspector formerly of London with a conservative (!) local much younger detective sergeant. The topical plots and often not so neat endings often leave me with something to really think about to compare with what I remember about those times here in the US.

I'm a big fan of the PBS British mysteries. For comparison, my other favorites are Foyle's War and Inspectors Lewis and Morse.

I hope that you Maryland/DC/NOVA mystery fans will give George Gently a look! You won't be disappointed.

I have to say in the episode that involves a trip to a local underground gay bar, Bacchus's discomfort was truly hilarious.

cop shows when the junior and senior essentially get along.

My word for Bacchus is "prick."

Gently's getting older, and sometimes older people feel a need to mentor in their work. Perhaps at the end of the show's run, which I hope won't be soon, more of whatever it is in Bacchus that Gently sees will come out.

but I think that their relationship was considerably better than that of Gently and Bacchus.

I've seen the first half of "Death Comes to Pemberley." Ovation channel showed the 1995 "Pride and Prejudice" (with a few edits) in the week before "Death." I wasn't sure of the casting of "Mrs. Darcy". I'd seen the actress a year or so before in the first year of the "Bletchley Park" series, and I just didn't think that she would be able to show that spark and that ability to enjoy life's absurd moments of the former Miss Elizabeth Bennett, particularly as played by Jennifer Ehle. After viewing "Death", I wouldn't decide whether it was the writing or the acting or both, but the new Elizabeth Darcy is very much like the actress's character as a former code break in "Bletchley Park."

I intend to see the second half, and perhaps the Elizabeth Darcy character will come out a bit. Admittedly, writing wonderful period characters was an Austin specialty, not necessarily one for Wodehouse.

Interestingly, Mrs. Bennett is played by the same actor who is Lewis's boss in Inspector Lewis, but in a wild-looking wig!

Watched "Rocket" last night on UNC-TV, but caught "Fugue" twice before. Outstanding. Up there with "Wallander."

I hope I don't have to know anything about Jane Austen or her characters to enjoy it. I have managed to avoid her stuff all my life. On the other hand, I have loved everything I ever read by P. D. James so I plan to watch it.

I love George Gently, but it is somewhat dark.

MM takes place in a soft and wonderful world, with a very nice main detective. I've had a major crush on Sgt. Troy for years. Go figure.

The only problem here in the DC area is that they're showing the same episodes over and over. It's probably time to sign up for one of the internet sources for some new plots.
