The Day Niagara Falls Stopped

Niagara Falls paused for 30 hours beginning March 29, 1848 when an ice jam upstream stopped the flow. (picture is from Niagara Falls in the very early 20th century, but the 1848 stoppage probably looked very similar)

When the ice jam upstream broke and the normal flow of water resumed...well, how many of those people's bodies are still at the base of the falls, never to be recovered?

Five of use drove up from Manhattan for the sole purpose of seeing Niagara Falls and the damned thing was closed! At least Horsehoe Falls was running.

By the time we got back I had consoled myself with the thought that what we saw was a lot rarer.
