The Real Life Amityville Horror

Sherman 1A's threads of what is being honored on certain days pique my interest as to what happen on the November 13 (my wife's and I wedding day) over the years. To our dismay we did not know that Ronald DeFeo murdered his family on that date in 1974. Here is the account of that day. More frightening than the story George Lutz made up to cash in on a tragic situation.

It was another routine evening at the Suffolk County, NY, emergency dispatch switchboard. Calls had not been pouring in, and anyway, this placid New York City suburb scarcely had any crime to complain of, at least by City standards. Suddenly, at 6:35 p. m., the calm was destroyed by a phone call that would shatter the safe suburban aura that pervaded the county. Transcripts from the conversation demonstrate the caller's rattled composure as he tried to relate to an operator the horrifying scene he and his friends had been led to:

My first cousin and his wife were bludgeoned to death as they slept, by their own son, who was obviously also my cousin. Horrible. We will never get over it.
