(isn't that why they were taken off the air?)

our household loved the show. we watched them every week.

on wiki:

"Their own television variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, became one of the most controversial American TV programs of the Vietnam War era. Despite popular success, the brothers' penchant for material that was critical of the political mainstream and sympathetic to the emerging counterculture led to their firing by the CBS network in 1969. One show was left unaired."

(I apologize if the wiki says that.)

I saw Seeger talking about it on some program, maybe the show that PBS did about Seeger.

I loved to watch the comic segments with the hippie girl Goldie O'Keefe (Leigh French) and also Pat Paulson and his rants.

I also seem to remember that my folks seemed to disapprove of some of the material.

Now, I would like to see the movie, Smothered.

Cesorship...and all because they dared to speak out against the Vietnam war, racism, etc.

it was a Sunday night event.
I still had a B&W tv in my trailer, so it was the height of my week to go to the union to watch the color TV and the Brothers Smothers.

... when they were on, I loved them for their humor and for their uncompromising political stance. They remained true to their beliefs until the end.

their resident guitarist gave a memorable farewell gesture, er, performance on their last show. Don't remember his name, but it was cleverly done.

Williams was a great comedy writer and wrote sketches for the Smothers brothers show and other comedians after that. He later wrote comedy sketches for Saturday Night Live. He was also a fine classical guitarist and wrote the big hit Classical Gas which he performed on the Smothers Brothers show.
