I have also listed this in Pet Forum.
Recently I have met an extraordinary woman who works very hard (two jobs to pay off massive student loan and a bankruptcy), like many of us, to keep afloat. What struck me about her is her humility and obvious discomfort to have to ask for help on a diabetes pet Group but people are not sharing her post and would rather "give her their expert advice" instead of helping. I have been there having to swallow my pride to ask. Many of us are there and are afraid to ask. Because people have helped me, I donated to her situation. Perhaps I understand it all too well, having a diabetic cat also.
Insulin costs are not cheap. (She has managed to patch together supplies for low or no cost including insulin from various places including Craig's List.) And teeth can become an issue and in turn poison the animal or contribute to heart problems. This makes it much harder to help a cat get into remission since these underlying conditions play with the ability to regulate blood glucose numbers. Right now she is at the juncture of having to do something to hopefully deter the secondary issues since it has gotten so bad. Like many of us, this kitty means the world to her. Family.
I am posting this in case you have any outlets to get the word out to help her. She has barely raised any money and if your charge card has room for $10 or so that you would not notice added then that would be really kind.
I am hopeful that this post is not a problem. She is a very honest and sweet person who has no means at all to get this done and that is not good for the health of this kit she has had for many years.

(21,848 posts)I consider myself fortunate that I can afford the costs.
Let me list the costs.
1. Food. You have to switch the cat to canned cat food, with high protein levels. Dry food has too many carbs. Some vets want you to use prescription food put out by Purina specifically made for diabetic cats. The protein level is 11.5%. I find many varieties of Purina Pro Plan and Purina One canned food to have 11% protein and generally use it. The cheapest canned cat food with 11% protein or higher is some varieties of Fancy Feast.
This switch will cost probably $1- $1.50 more a day, if you had been feeding your cat dry food.
2. Needles. You need a prescription for the needles and my recollection is that the cost is about $30.00 per 100. Make sure you shop around because the prices differ tremendously. That lasts 50 days.
3. Insulin. A vial costs around $99. Some places charge lots more so shop around. Once open, the vial lasts 60 days. Whatever is left after 60 days should be thrown out because the insulin is no longer as effective.
4. Vet visits. Every 6 months, the cat needs to see the vet to test his kidneys and other organs that may be affected by the diabetes. Blood tests will also determine how well the blood sugar has been controlled in the recent past. Best guess as to price $250 - $400 every 6 months.
Other possible costs:
5.Glucometer and strips. I bought one but couldn't get enough blood from my cat to measure the blood sugar.
Now for the good news -- my cat has been on insulin for two years and is doing okay -- no kidney damage. That's not bad considering he's almost 15 years old.

(14,807 posts)to find insulin and with networking. She is doing an amazing job. The only thing is this situation with the teeth which can really mess things up especially since she works so hard to keep her kitty healthy otherwise. Sometimes when you think you can manage then "boom" you get a challenge that seems unattainable. She just needs a few good angels to help her kitty out right now. Tough since so many places that can give are "out of funds" so she can't find help out there much. But there are people out there. I hope there are anyways.

(16,327 posts)She's $200 away from her goal! Let's make this happen.
glinda
(14,807 posts)today and getting him in the next opening they have! She works 12 hours a day most times so is hard for her to email or call during work hours. She is floored after seeing the amount raised so far.
I have to say this help from people has sent me into tears. Did not expect that.

(205,320 posts)Just hope that she reaches her goal and is able to take care of everything she needs. I rescued a cat from outside back in 2002 who needed serious dental surgery. She became a different cat after that, must have been in pain. Just hope that your friend can keep up with what she needs moving forward. Thanks so much for letting us know, please keep us updated...

(14,807 posts)right now all I know is she is getting the appointment set up to do the dental. Tricky thing that dental. But overall the kit is healthy with the exception of diabetes (and super bad teeth) and low insulin doses each day so fingers crossed.

(207 posts)even though she is $200 shy of the goal? I am confused by the estimate and her sub goal of $800.
glinda
(14,807 posts)estimate is the amount shown. There is a strong possibility that it will run over that amount (shown on paper) since there are several not so great looking teeth and until they get in there for extractions, they won't know the extent. The amount on the Vet papers is low balled. I know when my mother's cat went in, since we had to care for him when she died, was easily a thousand. WE were quoted about $750. There were meds also for pain with that. Several extractions and two were problematic. So surprises happen.
She feels confident with her relationship with the Vet that with the funds in hand that she has, she can get the surgery done. If she owes more than $800 she will have to work that out if funds are not raised.
$800 is a realistic range. $1000 would give her more cushion for the situation and if the surgery costs less would maybe allow her money to buy diabetes supplies.
When she first posted I asked her to clarify. I asked her also for proof. She is going forward with getting the appointment if she hasn't already done so. She was in process today while in-between her two jobs.
A good miracle would be that the surgery gets done and somehow she has a small cushion for insulin, needles, etc....rather than "still owing". Youch!
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)And the dental is important. I posted up thread that I rescued a cat from outdoors back in 2002 and the main issue was dental. After dental surgery, she calmed down and settled in, had to be in pain before that. Just hope that this kitty is able to get all that he needs, too.
glinda
(14,807 posts)She has done an amazing job caring for her cat making sure he is level in his readings and fed proper diet. Even the way she has made sure the insulin is there for him. This situation was quickly coming to a head. That is wonderful what you did for a rescue. Rescues are indeed good.
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)Two of my rescue dogs have come to me with very bad teeth and the little one had belonged to a wealthy woman who died, and I know he had veterinary care, talked to his vet to get his records. And I've recently acquired a kitten, this time, found him in a grocery store parking lot in August. They seem to find me...
I'm just hoping that your friend will be able to keep up with her regular vet expenses. Maintenance meds can get very expensive.
glinda
(14,807 posts)In truth sadly, I was not able to place half of them nor find no-kill situations so 12 years later they are with me still. Well except for a little dog and the two now tamed ferals I have not been able to place but they now run around my house so......probably mine now.
My one cat is diabetic and also has a deformed heart. Pills and insulin. yup....$$$$ but thankfully she has been steadfast in her care for her kitty. Up until the teeth thing. Extractions. But yes, diabetic animals can get huge teeth issues.

(3,818 posts)You are so sweet to do this for your friend. If you can PM me to remind me that would be helpful. Sometimes I get busy and might forget but I would like to help.

blackcrowflies
(207 posts)I would not give that to an animal without their vet's okay.
glinda
(14,807 posts)glinda
(14,807 posts)so she will most likely need to hit $1000. Has been my experience that cats that have bad teeth need plenty of extractions. And she has been told they average $80 apiece generally. Yikes!
Well that explains why my mother's cat Vet bill for dental was so high. $1200 for eight teeth. Glad that is over....not many left to pull.
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)Is this going to be enough for the teeth? The cat I rescued from outside needed numerous extractions, which I remember being expensive though my pets were on "the plan," a kind of pet insurance where I paid a little every month. Does she get a discount because she works there? Please let us know if this covers everything. I just had to check in...
glinda
(14,807 posts)a thousand. My mom's cat that we now have was $1200 for his teeth. She is also working on asking her boyfriend and she has a small amount left on her Credit card to use maybe. She is trying to piece it together. She will post updates on the site as well as she will let me know how things are going. Thanks so much for asking and caring!

(14,807 posts)I did not know people did this but someone made several larger gifts but gave fake emails and names. So GO FUND ME cancelled those out and when I looked today after she emailed me...she was back down to $350!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She had already made the Vet appointment for Monday. Now she has to cancel it.
I stepped up (okay I blow my cover but meh*) and charged $400. I really cannot believe that people do that to someone who is sincerely having an emergency medical need for their pet.
So still need this kicked.

(205,320 posts)How did this work? And how much more does she need now?
glinda
(14,807 posts)a lot of 100-200 dollar ones.
This person gave several times. Each time under a false email and false name. Even though the charge card was the same GoFundME refused per policy to pass through funds since nothing matched up.
'AAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't even have a regular job! I work piecemeal form home.
What a jerk that person is or something. I don't understand it.
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)When it said she reached her goal, but I couldn't really remember. Guess I don't really understand how these things work, or how this could happen. Don't they verify these things before they post them??
And whoever would do such an unspeakable thing is a whole lot more than a jerk. That is positively cruel. Does she still have the appointment? Let me see what I can do. I keep thinking of how much better my rescued cat was after she had her necessary dental work...

(14,807 posts)the Vet said his physical health and tests checked out. They had to do a full blood panel that they did not quote her for in full price and the two molars have to for sure come out so far. Yikes!
I need to figure out how to post the video.
glinda
(14,807 posts)Annie contacted me about Moo and because the GoFundMe funds do not get released right away (and due to Vet money manager not wanting to hold post-dated check) she will bring Moo back to have extractions the end of month. She also has a week off of work since she teaches. This will be good to monitor Moo.
There is updated pics on the link above also. Looks like she will come in pretty close to the amount raised give or take $100. Will keep you updated. Still trying to figure out how to transfer the video to here but my car broke down twice in one week so am having some time issues. Thanks everyone!
