My cat is in the vet hospital. UPDATE

Last edited Thu Dec 11, 2014, 03:20 AM - Edit history (1)

I have a cat who was born to alley cats down in New London, CT. Her family used to hang around a friends porch where they left food for all the strays. After a loose dog mauled her family, killing mom and siblings (but somehow missed her) my friend scooped her up at 6-7 weeks in age and fed her inside until I got her at 8 weeks. I got her prompt vet care and got the parasites all wiped out, wherein she immediately began to grow rapidly, and is now a 13 lb female at 1.5 years. Because she was scooped up a younger age than normal, she seems to be very attached to me.

So anyway, she was puking much of the day Saturday, eventually only throwing up clear foamy spew. She obviously seemed ill and sluggish. I watched over her and made sure she was drinking lots of water (she was) and by Sunday morning she was looking normal. I figure it was a stomach bug or she ate a bad bug. I come home from work today and found she was starting to puke again and she was wailing and sensitive on her tummy, so I made an immediate appointment to get her into the vet (within 30 minutes). The vet thinks she may have an obstruction, so she's getting x-rays and blood work now. If one is found, she'll need surgery.

I feel so lonely right now as I wait it out. I don't know if I'm going to be able to get any sleep without my kitty sleeping next to my head.

UPDATE:
The x-rays were inconclusive and the vet and I had a discussion about the next option very early this morning. I had the choice to wait for ultrasound in the afternoon or have the vet go in for exploratory surgery. Since it was obvious that something in the gut was bothering Iggy, my cat, I authorized the exploratory surgery this morning. I got a call back about 2 hours later with the vet saying "I have good news, and good news!" She was doing well out of surgery and he was able to definitively diagnose the problem - she had a very swollen upper small intestine and no obstructions in the intestine. He took a biopsy to confirm but stated that she has a common form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and while not curable, it's treatable to enable her to live a healthy life. I get her back Thursday, after she completes her anti-inflammatory treatment and heals a bit (she'll come home without a cone).

I'm very relieved (and about a $1000 lighter in wallet). I'll have to tweak her diet and might need to give her medicine from time to time to treat outbreaks, but my sweet cat is still going to be here.

Update: Thursday. I pick her up today. Here's a photo when she was younger, keeping me company as I surfed DU.

I guess the surgery recovery (if it happens) will be similar to when she was spayed. And then I'll have to find out what she ate, and eliminate it from the house.

I went through a similar experience when my kitty was only 4 months old and she ended up having emergency surgery to remove the obstruction (hair and bristles from eating my hair brush) but she is now 2 1/2 years old and just a crazy little girl who is both the light of my life and the bane of my existence.

Sending good thoughts for your kitty.

Here is my girl just the other night giving me the stink eye because I was singing

5 years ago, my tabby tomcat Erin was like this, so lethargic he was peeing on himself.

At the vet's, he briefly rallied but died overnight.

Last Wednesday I took my b/w female "Lucky" to the vet, she was really losing weight.
She's eating more now, so here's hoping.
Lucky is over 15, so hard to say.

Yep, I understand that lonely feeling. My cat has recently decided to sleep on the back of the couch instead of on the bed next to me. She comes in and checks on me, but not quite the same, smile. I know you are worried. Keep sending her mental pictures of you petting her. She is missing you, too.

We so need a kitty smilie!

That can be tested for with a PLI blood test. It's a long term illness but there are meds that help.

We've had our 16 y/o cat to the vet seven times in the last three weeks for two serious issues. It drains you emotionally and makes you weary. Best wishes for your cat.

About every six weeks or so, he would vomit a few times and stop eating. We'd take him to the vet for a steroid shot, and within a couple hours, he'd be eating again and fine for another six weeks. He was fourteen, and those shots kept his quality of life good, and kept him with us longer. Good luck.

I have 5.....all adopted me or I them from outside, except one. One large, 55-60 lbs part setter/pointer doggie/softy...... Yes they all get along....except for Freakky, she hates everyone of the other animals....but being one of first and oldest, she complained every time a new adoptee arrived. She has since forgiven me, but them? Never, she says......... I know how important the company of my furry friends is to me...so I'm glad for you.
