Green Day, Lou Reed, Joan Jett, Ringo Starr Lead 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has officially announced next year's inductees: Lou Reed, Green Day, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Bill Withers and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band will all join the class of 2015. Ringo Starr will be given the Award For Musical Excellence and 1950s R&B group the "5" Royales will receive the Early Influence Award.

Here is my opinion:

The Good - Yes, I think Green Day deserved first year entry. They have been consistently putting out amazing albums since 'Dookie' and have an album catalog that rates up there with some of the best of American artists. I will say that if it wasn't for 'American Idiot' though, Green Day probably would have waited a few years to get into the RRHOF. That album really did push Green Day to a top tier band. The fact that Green Day has pretty much been the same 3 members for 20+ years is a solid plus for their inclusion and probably a reason why Nine Inch Nails did not get selected first round (let's face it, Nine Inch Nails really is Trent Reznor and whomever he gathers up to put the album together with him. I think Trent Reznor alone is more deserving to be in RRHOF than his band.)

Stevie Ray Vaughn was long overdue. The guy was a guitar virtuoso whose career was cut short by the helicopter accident. He's also one of those talents that was never truly mainstream like Green Day which probably delayed his entry and is one of the greatest flaws of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was first eligible in 2008 but it wasn't until this year he made the list and that is total bullshit.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - Girls can rock and roll just as hard as the boys! Glad to see Joan on the list.

Lou Reed - Again he probably could have been inducted as a solo artist years ago but I guess the guy had to die first for the RRHOF to get their act together and finally put him in there. (btw I know he was also included with Velvet Underground)

Now my rant for the Bad

NWA - Seriously? Last year I was excited to see both Public Enemy and NWA on the list which pretty much are the Godfathers of Rap music with Public Enemy ushering in the East Coast sound and NWA doing the same for the West Coast. NWA included such profoundly iconic members like Dr Dre, Ice Cube and Easy-E - and their music is like one of those Genealogy Trees that spreads out as the rap movement grew on the West Coast, probably with Dr Dre as the greatest leader of that area. So to have one of the groups inducted (Public Enemy made it last year) and not the other (NWA was first eligible last year as was Public Enemy) is just whack!

Once again a total absence of the great Prog Rock Bands - Ok finally we got Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But there is still a serious void of some of the greatest Prog Rock bands out there like Yes, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull and King Crimson (I know there are more, people always toss in Kraftwerk). Thing is this - these bands can't even be considered if they aren't on the nominee list which is total bullshit!!! I think last year they tossed Yes but that's as far as it went.

I know their are a host of other groups overlooked. Your thoughts?

Oh and my edit note Ringo Starr Musical Excellence? Is that a joke? I know the guy is a Beatle but I think even Ringo Starr is getting a good laugh over that one!

But I knew there were folks who said that about Rush. So to the fans of Deep Purple I respect their plight and join their battle to get their band inducted.

As for NWA? I'm only familiar with that highly belligerent Compton album and recognize them for the gangsta rap kick start. Other than that some decent solo albums by Ice Cube & Dre. I can see why they didn't get in.

NIN is Trent. End of story. I dig some of his music and he has some rocking singles. He's a great live act for certain. His peak is still uncertain.

SRV was for me my Hendrix. Great virtuoso haunted by his personal demons & taken away far too soon. Should have already been in.

Joan Jett was a great pick. Respected rock pedigree, already hit her peak & yet still crushing her stomp-boxes decades later. May she rock forever.

Green Day - What can you say here? Legitimate heavy weights with the sales, singles, and Broadway success to back them up. Of course they're in. They may have already peaked.

**** Yeah, the Ringo Starr thing is comical.

If you count how many albums they produced then why would you bother putting bands like Nirvana or Sex Pistols in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I think each did 3 tops until one of their key members passed away and the band ceased to exist.

But it's the concept of what these bands did that put them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What Nirvana did for Alt-Rock/Grunge. What Sex Pistol did for Punk. Well NWA did that for Gangsta Rap but in reality they really did share that with Public Enemy because most rap boils down to East Coast/West Coast. The whole genre really was split by the coast but the biggest names of the West Coast like Dr Dre and Snoop Dog aligned with NWA.

No doubt that NWA's legacy is assured for certain. Just starting gangsta rap alone gets their ticket punched. But, I think Public Enemy was more influential because or their more concentrated focus on political consciousness/criticism of the system. NWA also explored political comentary, but clearly they were having a blast being rock stars.

Other than the shootings, the whole east coast/west coast rivalry had some interesting moments with both sides constantly trying to one-up the other.

Sure, music is subjective, but no Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Yes, Deep Purple... instead NWA and Public Enemy... R&R HOF is a joke... just my opinion.

Did Robert Fripp sleep with somebody's girlfriend? I know the boys in Yes couldn't have managed such a feat.

But, seriously: these bands gave not one single shit about what was popular at the time or what the record companies wanted them to do. They followed their own muses, and lots of people loved it. To me, that's the essence of rock and roll, even if you're singing about hobbits. (For that matter, it was actually Led Zeppelin that sang about hobbits. Yes tended to sing about ... mountains coming out of the sky, and ... standing there.)

Their sound may not be for everyone, but the same could be said of the Velvet Underground and other critical darlings who are fawned over by the rock hall.

Her music is as fresh today as when it was recorded. She rocks. Total integrity & respect for her fans all the way through her career.

It never bothers me too much, who gets in or who doesn't. It's nice though when an artist who I really love gets in. It means more people might learn about them and listen to their music. Plus I love watching their speeches. I've watched Patti Smith's induction speech a few times, it's beautiful.

I think Dr. Dre should get in for his solo work and production. i can see the case for NWA as they were very influential. Kraftwerk too.

As for prog rock stuff, hey they have their fans so that's cool. For me it's kind of more about soul, r & b and rock n roll than virtuosity. Though I think Yes should get in. They've stood the test of time.

Ringo was an excellent drummer. He's formed & toured with all-star bands post-Beatles. That's no small feat. You have to be a really good person to pull that off (all the different egos!). Maybe they're partly honoring that he's loved by musicians across the musical spectrum.

I love rock n roll.
