The best part of the show are the idiots who call in thinking that the "guests" are real.

My favorite part of the Citizens Auxiliary Police bit was at the end when he played the music.
"Dum, dum, dum,dum de do dum,,,Sometimes they're called the Highway Patrol, sometimes they're called state troopers....and sometimes (In Dave Santos' voice) The Citizens Auxiliary Police"

Produced for him long ago. Even kissed each other romantically once. He was very cool then.

When we traded e-mails about the Iraq war I decided he's a tool. But he was there for me for some rough times and he is very talented. Just wish he didn't sell his soul to stay in radio

Did he become a right-winger after he married that Republican Party fund-raiser?

Answers: 1) Yes I think. 2) Don't know about the marriage thing. I know he did get hitched again but I don't know any more beyond that.

He was in ATL at the time but ready to head out to LA. This was when there was a fairness doctrine so it was an awesome time, and most hosts didn't toe the line one way or the other.

After the FCC got rid of the fairness doctrine, we liberals couldn't find a radio job to save our lives. I gave up. A lot of hosts turned into sudden Repukes just to stay employed. I suspect that was the impetus for Hendrie's "new" political stances.

But god it was funny watching him work the phones and do all those voices. And even more funny when callers thought it was a real caller he was dealing with.

Good times.

He married Maria Sanchez in 1997.
He himself said on-air that his wife, Maria, was a Republican Party fund-raiser.
They were married for 10 years.

I listened to him back in the mid-1990s, on KFI AM, (before he married her), and he seemed to be fairly moderate in his political beliefs back then.

He was on KFI AM from 7 to 10 PM weeknights (He followed the "Karel and Andrew" show on KFI)

Then, more stations picked him up, but (I think) he still ran the show out of KFI

I always thought it was more than coincidence that he changed from being a moderate to being much more conservative after marrying Maria Sanchez.

The conspiracy nut in me makes me wonder if the "Powers that be" who ran the Republican Party back then (and still do) somehow "arranged" for him to meet Maria Sanchez in the first place.
After all, he probably had hundreds of thousands of regular listeners even while he was still at KFI

but he was pretty strong willed, so he went willingly I suspect.

I worked with him early 90s. He hated Atlanta because the audience didn't get him at first. Or maybe ever.

When I heard him broadcasting from CA I got a kick out of hearing him, knowing his schtick and that most of the voices were his. I was glad he had a chance somewhere else, but sad his politics got so sucky.

He was doing overnights and I knew a cop who loved listening to him when he was on dogwatch. The average age of the audience was probably in the 60s so he lasted less than a year because they didn't 'get' him either.

Maria was probably very good looking.

Weren't all the voices his?

On rare occasions he did have on an actual "guest"
Once he had actor Edward Norton on ..

By the way, IMO, the funniest voice he ever did was when he impersonated Art Bell.
He would also "do" General Johnson Jameson as Art's guest, and Art would ask the General about aliens and anal probes etc.
(Hendrie admitted that General Johnson Jameson was based on Richard C. Hoagland, the author of "The Monuments Of Mars", who was a regular guest on Coast To Coast AM with Art Bell)

so that was a no-go.

But yes, he did all the voices. He would have a phone line - or several -open that he called into and I'd have that potted up so he could switch from his mic to the phone for that authentic smushy caller sound.

Watching him go so quickly between characters was amazing. It almost seemed like he was talking over himself sometimes, that's how great he is at pulling that gimmick off.

I was in a sound proof control room or listeners would have heard me laughing my ass off often.

Now I've had my DU break...back to my new job to make that New Years Buckage.

Thanks for the great conversation ( and sorta great memories ) red dog 1
