Why?

(Background: I am a Canadian), but WHY!? do Americans measure everything in terms of 'football fields'??? Canadians don't measure anything in terms of hockey rinks, nor do Indians measure things in term of cricket pitches. I've always found this odd.

I remember hearing on CNN, MSNBC etc that the 'Freedom Tower" is xfootball fields tall, or that an aircraft carrier is xfootball fields long etc etc.

a "football field" is a lot easier to visualize than 300 feet.

(But, are we including the end zones?)

to Canadians who watch CFL. But I don't watch either, so I'd appreciate a reporter just saying 300'. (no need to convert it into metres either.)

a football field. Yes I know a football field is 300 ft. But if someone say to me, it's 150 ft, I just automatically think oh, half a football field. Or if someone says 30 yds, I think of the 5 yard stripes on a FB field. Maybe it's because in my youth as a member of the marching band, I marched up and down many a football field.

and feet. Football fields are merely something for me (as a fan) to spend my money to sit at while watching my hometown team get its ass handed to it on a regular basis.

American football field (green) and

but most everybody understands what a football field is in the US.

ETA - I think way back in the dark ages when I went to school an acre was measured in rods [WTF]. It was something like 16 rods X 12 rods. I have also heard it described as the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in a day (not sure what brand of plow they used....)

ergo - football field at least means something
