The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHa! So I wanted to get a 2nd quote on re-insulating the corner of my attic where it fell down
but had contract in hand for review from the 1st people I called with the well-known name in the yellow pages. After procrastinating for a week, I finally opened and actually read the quote. Assholes -- verbally during energy audit they quoted ~$2K total after either $500 or $1000 rebate, depending on whether I do attic alone or also do basement work, from nonprofit energy org.
The written quote was $3K for the attic alone, which will only qualify for $500 rebate. Hah! I didn't like E, who I spoke with on the phone because she was too pushy, and B. the auditor was charming but very, very salesy.
So I wrote back and informed E. that I've had a chance to review the quote and noted the massive discrepancy between the verbal and written quotes.
Now I can contact the guy that doesn't advertise, but is known word-of-mouth only, who builds entire houses himself. I just learned about him from a co-worker who just had her kitchen remodeled and was thrilled with the result and the price.

We need some work done in the spring... I'm asking around before I call anyone!

I lucked into a great observation about referrals. We were trying to do work in the kitchen and could never get electricians or plumbers to provide quotes for us in a timely manner. We complained to the counter-top people, who would have been the last ones on the project itinerary to provide us with a service. Since they were motivated to get us to the final stage of our project, THEY referred us to the service companies that they worked well with. For the most part, it was a good experience.
