Last year. I have the same setup as you so.

You said intermittently: I hope the repairman can duplicate the problem. If he can't, it can get expensive, and frustrating...and cold.

Mine failed but I could never duplicate the problem during daylight hours. The unit is up in the attic and it took me a while to figure it out: The flame would not light below a certain temperature. If the sun was out the attic would heat up and mask the problem. It turned out to be a cracked solder on the circuit board that broke continuity below about 40F.

On the first visit he replaced the thermostat (which WAS hinkey). He said that if the problem recurred I should touch nothing and call him so he could read it himself.

So it did.

And I did.

And now he has rewired and cleaned the sensor. So far so good (5 hours later). If it happens again "heat exchanger cleaning" may be in order.

I think he's a good guy. His outfit did good, reasonable work on my water heater a coupla years back.

it never ends, right?

When you say it blows cold air intermittently, to me that means it either works or it doesn't.

The way it should work is that:

You ask for heat

You hear a click and a small ( inducer ) fan runs for about a minute or so, then....

"Frump", the burner lights.

90 seconds or so later, your forced air fan blows warm air and does so until your thermostat is satisfied.

What exactly are the sequence of events when it does fail you?
