(14,400 posts)AA midget (17 years old), but then again I am Canadian and it's pretty much a right of passage.
I stopped when it was time to go to school, I wasn't good enough to get a full ride scholarship and really didn't want to try my luck at the Junior level.

(28,394 posts)One of my sons wanted to play hockey when he was growing up and I would never let him because of the crazy practice times and distance to the rink. When he got out on his own, he joined a league! I was amazed-- I didn't even know he could skate.
I could never stay upright on skates!
Also... girls didn't play hockey when I was a kid.

(5,604 posts)I used to have a back acre that froze over into a perfect rink every year, had flood lights and all, and I kept it nicely maintained, and of course street hockey all year around. And... the obligatory disclaimer "Yes, I am Canadian".

(7,906 posts)I didn't play hockey, but I did enjoy ice skating.
I used to have a lot of fun, mimicking the Olympic figure skaters. I'm sure I looked nothing like them, but in my mind I did.

(27,247 posts)They were literally skating rings around me. It took everything I had just to be able to stay upright on the ice, and even then if someone bumped into me I would quickly find myself on my backside.

(948 posts)I just got sick of the traveling and being constantly in pain...
I just quit one day... Couldn't get on the bus...
My knees are shot.
My ankles are shot.
My shoulders are shot.
All my joints creak. I had 3 concussions. Last one I don't even remember, just waking up on the bench....
I was smallish, 5.8 around 165 lbs...I got my ass kicked regularly, but I gave as good as I got...
Once I quit, around 21 or so, I started filling out... I got up to 225 lbs by 25...
Oh I wish I had that weight when I was playing!
Would I do it again? In a heartbeat, many great memories...

(65,076 posts)Just for a couple years. A classmate's dad was a Canadian from the maritimes.
He started a hockey league for 10 to 12 year olds. But there was only one rink in a town of nearly 80,000, so there was little ice time.
So, i'd say it was semi-organized. I remember the pads i had actually being too big so they had to be masking taped to tighten them.
I could skate, but i never played enough to really grasp the flow.
By 7t grade i realized i was better as basketball and baseball (all glove no bat, though) and did that.
Since i outgrew the skates, my parents were completely happy with that.

(12,296 posts)I was about 5. They & their friends were 12 & 10.
I think they just liked to shoot the puck at my head.
But I love the game to this day & wish there would have been organized girls/womens hockey 40 years ago when I was a kid.

They didn't really enforce the offside rule, since there was no blue line on the basketball court, so one night I stationed myself in front of the net and poured in seven. Seven!
