Since the 1990s, home builder Peter Cohen has spent tens of thousands of dollars transforming his Goleta, Calif., house into a kitty paradise for his many rescue cats.
The result? One awesomely purr-fect pad.
Home design website Houzz details just how Cohen turned his home into a cat playground. Hes spent years building a colorful and intricate network of perches, tunnels, ramps and walkways (called catwalks, natch) for the enjoyment of his and his roommates many cats. They currently have 15 of them -- all of them rescues.
We try to take the kittens that other people dont want, especially kittens that have been traumatized, Cohen told Catster in an interview last year.

(75,480 posts)All my attempts at bringing stuff in for kitty's pleasure have enriched the makers and kitty ignores them. But I do applaud the sentiment and truly hope some of the cats enjoy their digs.

(12,684 posts)All he needs is a good brand of litter, the proper box to cat ratio, and someone to clean the boxes at least every other day.
Hmmm - I'm thinking of a great part-time business opportunity for the couch-locked teenager in your family - Cat box cleaning service.
You'll need:
A Costco Account
Car
A cleaning "cart" where you have -
covered trash can
two/three types of slotted spoons and metal spatulas, wire brush(?)
Gloves and disposable face masks.
Baking soda
Febreeze
Several types of kitty litter on hand depending on customer preferences and number/types of cats in the household.
A selection of kitty litter box liners
Trash bags - lots
Nature's Miracle stain and odor remover (for any carpets)
Basic pet-safe cleaning gear (rags, cleaner)
First aid kit (if there's some angry kitties)
and finally -
a Heavy Duty Dust Buster (battery operated) with the Car charger.
And the usual business book-keeping/software sort of stuff so you can schedule, bill, find customers addresses, that sort of thing.

(12,684 posts)Nice use of McMansion space, and probably easier to maintain and keep clean if he is running an unofficial cat rescue. I like that the cat spaces work with the rest of the house design, and it all works together - the cats have their space and the humans have theirs.
You could probably do the same if you rescued parrots, but it wouldn't work for dogs.
