She's so Belle. Emma Watson to portray Belle in Beauty and the Beast.

Emma Watson to Play Belle in Beauty and the Beast

Emma Watson will play Belle in a new live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, a rep confirms to Gossip Cop. The actress was cast in the role by director Bill Condon. The movie’s script was written by Watson’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower director Stephen Chbosky.

After news broke, Watson wrote on Facebook: “I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it. Emma xx.”

The Harry Potter star had previously been attached to a different take on the Beauty story with director Guillermo del Toro. Disney’s animated version of Beauty and the Beast was a commercial and critical smash hit in 1991. It became a long-running stage success on Broadway.

Last week, Watson gave a powerful speech about gender equality at the World Economic Forum in Davos, announcing the launch of the HeForShe campaign’s new IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative. She last appeared on the big screen in Noah, and has a number of forthcoming projects, including Regression and Colonia. Are you looking forward to seeing her as Belle in Beauty and the Beast?

as a live action version of Sleeping Beauty. Plus, Snow White & the Huntsman did pretty well, too, I think.

He's not all that big tho. What would be cool...get this guy to be the prince in human form, one of these big scary fuckers (Samuel L. Jackson would be a LOT of fun as the Beast, and since it's going to be a makeup role anyway his ethnicity won't be an issue) to be the prince in beast form, and dissolve between the two when he goes into and out of being the Beast.

From watching the animated version lots of times, before the spell he was a normal-size teenage boy. When the spell was cast he turned into a huge being with a much deeper voice. When it was broken he turned back into a normal-size man with a high tenor voice.

In animation you can do anything. In live action that basically demands two actors.

While we're at it, why not cast Helen Mirren in the role of Belle?

Or cast a young male actor opposite the young female actor?

Why do we immediately rush to cast a much older male opposite a much younger woman?

The prince AS a prince...that's got to be a young guy.

The prince as the Beast...I got the impression that in addition to the hair, claws and extra weight, the witch threw about a hundred extra years on him.
