In the 19th century, teachers who supported standards of personal hygiene and the bathing of children met with great resistance. One teacher sent a note home suggesting a young boy, Willie, should be bathed. The reply came: “Willie ain’t a flower, he is a boy. Learn him, don’t smell him.”
