(24,007 posts)To each his/her own and all that, but I would call that mutilation rather than modification. Gonna look really hideous when those folks are octogenarians.

(10,418 posts)I just thought a large tattoo on on the insides of each forearm would really look cool. Then I realized why I wanted to do that and the desire has since left me. It was all about trying to impress people for me. My self esteem is more healthy now.

(35,687 posts)Thanks for sharing the insight.
As a teacher, I get a lot of students who do this sort of thing. I often wonder about the motivation for people to go through the time, trouble and expense.
Like right now, I have a student who has blue hair which is long on one side and shaved off on the right side.
My personal preference is to be as nondescript as possible both in my dress and my car. For whatever reason, and it's not that I don't enjoy attention--I'm a Leo, for Dog's sake--I just prefer to play observer rather than actor.
I enjoy other people's efforts, though. My favorite is people who wear artistic jewelry and intriguing color schemes.

(11,589 posts)and making oneself not look *human* seems more like mutilation to me.
I once was on a train to work with a man who split his tongue and made his eyes look like a snake. (Silicone implants on his eyebrows and stuff like that)
He was tattooed like a snake. He had bumps on his forehead, once again, silicone
I have a fear of snakes

(41,832 posts)I have always refrained. Why? Because you can not wear a tattoo if you ever intend to go to a Japanese Onsen (public Bath house.) Its always been my dream, when visiting Japan to visit an Onsen or Roten Buro.
Those who wear tattoos in Japan have always been associated with the Yakuza (Mafia) and so are banned from using the facilities. They scare away patrons who think they maybe soaking next to a dangerous person. So, I will probably never have a tattoo... because I intend to enjoy the warm to hot soaking in a Japanese bath!

(11,795 posts)Take modification a bit far.
Teeth filing is actually an ancient practice. Ancient elite Mesoamericans filed and embedded their teeth with jewels. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/05/090518-first-dentists.html
