LOST PARADE

When I was yet young, I had a friend
who taught me what kindness was.

Connecting fun adventures one after the other as if by magic, we played
We’d meet up with each other to go wherever, and there was no sadness anywhere
But there came a day when the winds were strong and for some reason you said goodbye

After we made new friends in our own worlds, we promised we’d play together again

In my own way I was able to make new friends; we’d skip rope, play baseball,
got scolded at a school retreat for making a fuss until morning about the person we liked

So, now I’ll go to meet you; what should we talk about?
My heart bounds toward that place

“Goodbye,” you say; “Why?” I say
“Let’s meet again,” I say; “We can’t,” you say
“Why not?” I say, as my tears pour out
Then you say, “Because you should use those tears for people who are alive instead”
“You mustn’t use it in vain,” you say

Becoming an adult at my own pace, I find the world vast
with all sorts of points of view, plenty of things for me to learn
Now having known what righteousness is,
I wonder if I can live as a righteous human
Well, I’ll just not forget that when I was young,
I was taught what kindness is

We cannot move forward while facing behind
because moving forward means putting your back to the past

“Whenever you give your friend a push on the back,
that friend is no longer looking at you
But you shouldn’t want them to look back at you
Instead, you want them to move forward; you have to see them forward”

When I was yet young, I had a friend
who taught me what kindness was.
