More tales of horror from the hell that is European Socialized Medicine

So today I was told that my septuagenarian uncle who is retired and living on his old age pension got word from the NHS death panel that the date for his hip replacement surgery has been set for late next month. It might have been sooner, but after the bureaucratic healthbots finished running all the preliminary tests on him, they found that he is going to need some blood work first.

And worst of all, he isn't going to get the satisfaction of paying for any of it!

OH GOD!!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!!!

Which I am waiting on for knee replacement. From when the physical therapist told me that therapy was not going to help, it took two weeks to see my former surgeon. He sent me to the knee replacement surgeon - it took two weeks for them to call and give me an appointment a month later. I see him in two weeks and find out how long it will take before surgery will be scheduled.

Then there is the problem of payment. The best orthopedic clinic in this area is (of course) not in network for my insurance so I have to pay 30% of the cost PLUS whatever the doctors bill above what the insurance is willing to pay (unless the surgeon takes pity and writes off the difference). The maximum out of pocket is $10,500 which does not include anything the doctors bill above the insurance company's approved rates.

I'm really hoping my new knees don't cost me more than about $20-25,000 out of pocket....

a couple of years ago. Not life threatening, but still, it's a heart issue. He's a US expat that lives in a small town in Burgundy.

Ambulance showed up in minutes, with an MD staffing it; Jim was kept in the hospital three or four days for tests, told to lose some weight and given a couple of medications. Total cost to him? 300 euros for the whole thing.

The horror, the horror.

Nobody survives NHS. Or any other kind of socialized medicine. I read that somewhere.

Good luck to him!

Uncle Sugar paid for my hip replacements. It was awful -- awful.

Tell your uncle to do his post op physical therapy and all will go well.

Not that it matters. Both are commie socialist hippie health care systems!

How's the recovery?

Reasonable co-payments, excellent service. Everyone should have something similar.

"Both are commie socialist hippie health care systems!" Did you know we have to hug a tree to qualify?

Recovery went fine and the soap stock was delicious.
