In 1936, Princeton students were angered by early bonuses paid to World War I veterans. They said it was inevitable that the U.S. would go to war within 30 years, so they demanded an early payment of $1000 each through their group, The Veterans of Future Wars. By June, the group had 50,000 members in 584 chapters nationwide. Their motto was “hand outstretched, palm up, expectant”. All of the founding members did serve in World War II, except for one, who was injured in an automobile accident.
