I'd like to recommend Consumer Cellular. I don't use a lot of data or texts, and I don't do a lot of calling. My bill will be going down 50% per month. You can keep your phone (maybe) and your phone number (definitely).
I found out about them via AARP. Anyway, caveat emptor, YMMV. Happy to help. Have a lovely day!

(37,457 posts)If I have any problems, I'll report back here. They came recommended via AARP and they've been with BBB for 14 years I think. The plans were reasonable, the billing seemed reasonable. As I said, I'll report back if I have any undue hassles

I don't text and it's a dumb phone and I like it that way.

(18,495 posts)I usually keep mine switched off, too.
I didn't know until after I got it that as long you are connected to wifi, your calls and data are FREE! So I can use it as much as I want while getting chemo, and not worry about draining my remaining minutes too soon. (Usually just I end up playing a mahjong game on it, but I could watch Netflix if I wanted.)

(20,886 posts)She was having problems with AT&T long distance and lost her cell. She's signing up for cell and in-house service and dropping AT&T land line. She also gets the AARP discount.
I can't drop my land line because I don't get cell service at my house. My cell is Tracfone for about $10 a month, where I now have a gazillion rollover minutes. Wish I could drop my land line.

No text, no photos, no long chats.
Pretty much just essential information.
Works for us.
