It seems to have replaced the ill-fated V train that was meant to connect local stops in Queens with the Sixth Avenue subway.

The letter S is only used for a handful of shuttle trains. It's the B, D, F and M that run together in the Sixth Avenue subway between Broadway/Lafayette and Rockefeller Center.
