The organ part in the Animals' version of "House of the Rising Sun" is pretty badass too.

He told a great story about getting on the record. First he wanted to play guitar but Michael Bloomfield came in so he forgot about that. Then they said some organ would be good on the song and he volunteered. Said if the previous guy had not left it on he would not have known how to turn it on. Partly because the classic Hammond tonewheel organs had two switches, one to start the motor and one to turn on the tube amplifier.

Anyhow Kooper said he wasn't really a good player but he kind of followed along, but late, some of the bass parts and that is how a great track is born.

He said that at the end of the take, Dylan called him out for coming in late, and he thought he was busted (since the producer had been shooing him away all day), but Dylan liked the effect, so it stayed in.
