I just picked one up inexpensively at an estate sale a couple months ago, and am really starting to enjoy playing it. I'm a bit familiar with some of the repertoire (bluegrass fiddle tunes mostly) through playing guitar, but beyond that it's uncharted territory for me.
Anyone have any tips, tricks, resources, favorite books/songs, and the like?

(2,959 posts)Check ou the instructional section and links, especially the two and three finger chord charts. I've been a guitar player for over 30 years but full mandolin chords were like learning to play all over again until I found two finger alternative.

Pick up a copy of Don Julin's "Mandolin for Dummys" if you're looking for an easy to follow and thorough instructional book. i wish is had been available 15year ago when I started trying to learn mandolin.
keep playing is about the only worth while tip. maybe get a Snark and some extra lithium bateries.
Remember "Mandolin - it's Italian for can't be tuned". at least that what bluegrassers tell me.

(4,138 posts)I'll have to take a look at "Mandolin for Dummies." Overall, it's a good series, but I thought the guitar one was broad but too shallow.
And I agree, those Snark tuners are so much better than the older generation of electronic tuners.

(25,816 posts)I have played guitar for years but never mandolin. I had a hard time tuning it until a friend revealed that the bridge was
moveable and wasn't set right. A slight adjustment and there it was. Fun.

(4,138 posts)Intonation is OK in the lower position, but a bit iffy higher up. Probably partly because it's not the best quality instrument, but a setup certainly couldn't hurt.

(3,919 posts)several of my ancestors were mandolin players (french & spanish alps kinda people) and there was one handed down through the generations - but someone's ex wife got it. off and on the fantasy of playing mandolin comes to me and always talk myself out of it. nearly bought one a couple of years ago but decided against - and now, perhaps i shall rethink that decision. thank you for pointing me in this direction ~ third time is a charm.
