I have found it's better to find the hole by touch than by sight. At least with that opposite ear.

I pull the lobe down a bit, which helps as I poke around in the right area.

I have diamond studs that I wear all the time, and I can sit at the kitchen table, remove them, clean and dry them, and put them back in without even using a mirror.
