Holy crap the church of Scientology is even more bizarre than I originally thought.

(11,833 posts)After seeing an interview with the author, Lawrence Wright, that someone had posted here in the video section.
Plan to watch the documentary over at a friends house this week or next. He has HBO Go.
I'm fascinated with it. Really freaky stuff.
Have you seen The Master? If not, definitely check it out. That's the movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, very loosely based on the beginning of scientology. It's a great movie, imo.

(10,107 posts)I would recommend that movie also. I thought the acting was great and it was just plain weird.

(28,271 posts)This HBO documentary depicts John Travolta as a none-too-bright follower, but it appears that Cruise has consumed the Kool-Aid, with full knowledge of his wretched "religion." This is a genuinely valuable and disturbing piece of work, told by long-time members who obviously know what they're talking about. Highly recommended.

(100,099 posts)The scary thing was when they were talking about how he bullied Tom Cruise into rejoining the religion, when he wanted to be with Nicole. Because Nicole's father was a prominent psychiatrist, and the "church" views that profession as the devil.
Hell Hath No Fury
(16,327 posts)more than anything. Travolta had played that role for many years, but his career was fading and he wasn't as involved as his early years. Cruise, with his visibility and his success was desperately needed to keep Scientology in the news. Lose Cruise and they are stuck with Kirsty Alley as the face of Scientology -- that's into going to bring in the $$$.
Like all cults, Scientology was/is driven by a single individual -- first Hubbard, then Miscavige. Miscavige is doing everything he needs to do to solidify his leadership and make himself unquestionable.
Hell Hath No Fury
(16,327 posts)I had long known the whole Xenu/thetan/volcano thing, but what was really fascinating to hear was the serious level of personal abuse that was going on, especially under Miscavige. To have that number of senior Scientology members come out and tell their stories was incredibly. Something that I was surprised they did not go into was who Scientology ran the folks who ran the Cult Awareness network (who labeled them a cult) out of business with lawsuits and then took over their persona -- now when you contact the network about Scientology you are told that Scientology is a religion and not dangerous.
No wonder Katie Holmes escaped her marriage from Cruise essentially under cover of darkness.
I am glad this info is out there, I am glad folks are seeing ti for the scam it is, and I hope the damned thing goes out of business.

(38,469 posts)The fact that Miscavige was appalled at Tom Cruise's sex habits.

(17,340 posts)But doesn't know that he's appalled.
He just thinks that he's "practicing Scientology".

(48,217 posts)Yeah, worse than I thought, and I already had a low opinion of it. Scientology, I mean, not HBO. I actually like HBO, but I refuse to subscribe to cable, especially when all the programs eventually show up elsewhere.
