This guy has worked on shrimp boats with us, traveled to Bimini with us on a small speedboat with the wind in his fur, chased iguanas down island, and been a real good guy. He's about 20 as far as we can tell. He was a rescue 16 years ago.
It's pretty sad because we can tell he's in pain. We were looking at pics, so I wanted to share Reeces with you guys.
I'm thinking of cooking him some ground beef with white rice (his fav "people meal" tomorrow. Tonight I gave him chicken off my plate and it was the first he had eaten in almost two days. He was my first puppy, as I met him when I started dating my now wife.
He hasn't climbed up in my lap in I can't remember how long. He'll always be my first puppy.
We have another rescue dog in the house now, but she is nowhere near as cool as Reeces was in his prime. This is not going to be a good week.

(149,727 posts)It's always tough to say goodbye to a beloved pet; I've been there too.
Those are great pictures!
Spoil the heck out of him this week...
May he pass gently.

(51,122 posts)Never easy. Honestly, we humans extend their natural lives well beyond their true lifespans.
Eventually we have to make the call.
Just remember you made his life better. Beef and rice is a good reward for a very good dog.

(4,412 posts)put in about 1/2 a can of warm water with it. It really helped her that last month. I worked with vet years ago and his rule of thumb was when there are more bad days than good days it's time.

(40,656 posts)give it time. My dogs all died when they were 18. you will always love them but the one there now is to help you heal your heart. Hugs to all

(9,897 posts)I know how emotional it is and how hard it is to reach the end of the journey.
Thank you for giving him a good home, a great life and loving goodbye.
May the memories of the good times warm you in the days to come.

(9,426 posts)Too bad ALL animals could not have a loving, happy home like the one you gave him. He will cross the Rainbow Bridge, and meet you on the other side someday. He knew LOVE, and that is important. Sounds like he gave as much as he got, too. So sorry for your loss. The new puppy will miss him too, so be sure to help him/her through this as well.

Hugs.

(13,661 posts)He looks like he is just so full of character; I love that photo of him on the boat.
Don't let him linger too long; we kept our beloved Tommycat too long and I hate myself for it.
It's so damn hard. But he knows he was loved, and no doubt loves you.

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your sweet Reeces.
You're doing the right thing -- keep spoiling him rotten while you can. If you need a vet to help at the end, call to make sure they'll give you time to say goodbye. We had our whole family going in and out of the room for a couple hours.

(135,425 posts)It works as an anti-inflammatory and it helps with joint pain. Also, if he's near the end of the line, it will not kill him if you give him a single plain old aspirin with food each day, and see how he tolerates that. It might pep him up. If he peps up, hit him with a glucosamine/chondroitin pill as well--they take a few weeks to kick in, but they can help with those creaky joints too. If he's not hurting once he's got some aspirin, etc. in him and his quality of life is OK, just spoil and enjoy him. He might appreciate a warming pad, one of those ones you can buy at CVS for people with aches and pains...I know my old dogs and cats really liked those. I had a cat who would get up where the pad was situated inside her cat bed and yell until I turned the thing on!
I had a "Heinz 57" terrier who lasted about that long. Man, they're the best, aren't they? Believe me, I know what you are going through.

(9,126 posts)It's so hard to lose a pet you love so much. Sometimes people don't get it. But I know just how you feel and it's one of the hardest things. Your doggie is beautiful and it sounds like he had an amazing life with you. Spoil him as much as you can. My thoughts are with you.

(6,011 posts)knowing what you're going through. Our dog came to her end in January at 14 1/2, and I miss her all the time. We don't have another dog to distract us, but we have had our friends' lab girl for an overnight and she'll be spending a week with us this month. Gotta get my dog fix until I find another special one.
Our relationship with dogs is ancient, and our love for a dear dog is everlasting.
