Someone please tell me they not only remember Steely Dan, but they also like their music. I felt like sharing this news at work today, and I mostly got blank stares when I mentioned their name. I guess 45 is the new 80.

(4,631 posts)In the distant past I was once known as "Steely Me"
Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scale
Just get them all out of here
A HERETIC I AM
(24,380 posts)Can you hear me call
On this old Ham radio?
All I got to say
I'm alive and feelin' fine
Should you come my way
You can share my poison wine.
No marigolds in the promised land
There's a hole in the ground where they used to grow
Any man left on the Rio Grand
is the King of the World, as far as I know.
Another great opener;
Agents of the law
Luckless pedestrians
I know you're out there
with rage in your eyes and your megaphones
Saying all is forgiven
Mad dog surrender
How can I answer?
A man of my mind can do anything
I'm a bookkeepers son
I don't want to hurt no one
Well, I crossed my old man back in Oregon
Don't take me alive
Both typed from memory. I know most of the lyrics by heart from all the albums to Gaucho as well as Fagens "The Nightfly" and "Kamakiriad"
Love them, love them, love them.

(4,631 posts)Oh man. Thankfully I was under the age of 18 back then when my CB handle matched my penchant for having fun and I got caught up in the nuance of youthful indiscretion. But I did not hurt anyone.

(24,380 posts)"Chasing the Dragon" is a specific way of smoking Heroin.
Take a pece of aluminum foil or similar heatproof material, place a hits worth of "C-Dubs"....China White Heroin on the end, hang the foil off the edge of the table or other flat suface and heat the Heroin from below with a lighter.
The crystals will liquify and wiggle around, looking sort of like a Chinese Dragon and start to smoke. Inhale the smoke as it rises and you are "chasing the dragon."
Don't ask me how I know this!
FWIW, I'll be 56 next month.
(Edit here) I read that the song "Dr. Wu" is about/dedicated to the person who helped Fagen kick his Heroin habit way back when.

(4,631 posts)It was the scare tactics used in the 60's and 70's that set my mind to thinking chasing a dragon was a futile adventure and you just get deeper into trouble the more you chase him.
I won't ask or tell of any smoking craters of past indulgence.

(11,833 posts)I listen to them a lot. The ones I listen to most are probably Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic & Aja. I have all of their albums in my iTunes. Love listening to them.
Enjoy the concert tonight.
Let us know how it goes!
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)And yes, I'll let you know how it goes. The first two shows on their tour were last night and tonight in my town. I chose tickets for the second night to give them a chance to work out kinks from the first night.

(11,833 posts)Those jazz-groove sounds will stay with you for months.
You know, now that I think about it every one of their albums is great, from start to finish.
If I had to pick a favorite two I guess I'd say The Royal Scam & Katy Lied. But every single one they did is great.
Can't wait to hear about the show!

(23,340 posts)by my favorite band Kung Fu, joined by a number of players from Steely Dan.
Kung Fu has outrageously good musicians.
Funk-rockers Kung Fu played a pair of Toys For Tots benefit concerts at Toad's Place in New Haven back in December. The band was joined by many special guests for the second set on the first night to perform Steely Dan's The Royal Scam album in its entirety. Videographer MKDevo has just unveiled incredible video of "The Fez" > "Green Earrings" from that December 19th show at Toad's Place.

15,000 45 year olds singing "My Old School"! It was very cool!
I've seen them 5 or 6 times since, including twice more in the Detroit area. They played "Pine Knob" - now DTE Music Theater - an outdoor ampitheater not far from The Palace. In fact, their "Live In America album has several tracks recorded at Michigan concerts and I was at all of them.
I've seen them last time at the Barbara B. Mann center in Fort Myers, FL.
I have always admired Becker and Fagen for their incredible attention to detail and professionalism, not to mention just..their craft. I enjoyed them every single time I've seen them.
Between Becker and Fagen, they have a LOT of music since they released "Gaucho" in 1980.
Have fun and dance in the aisle!

Be prepared for the practically geriatric crowd!
I remember looking around and thinking - what are all these OLD people doing here?
First time I REALLY realized that I was inching towards an expiration date.
At one concert, a guy in the front row died of a heart attack during the opening number of the Doobie Brother's set!

(2,302 posts)I've gone to see them about five times, and one solo Donald concert. They are my one and only,
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)They played a really great show last night. A jazz trio opened for them: drums, jazz organ, and one guy who switched between vibes/saxophone/flute. The opening band wasn't listed on the tickets or signage, and they announced their given names, but never the band's name. Anyway, they were good and they had the crowd ready to see the Dan.
Steely Dan played a really great set. They went for almost 2-1/2 hours. Donald Fagen can still hit all the notes. Walter Becker was in fine form. Steely Dan, as constituted last night, consisted of 13 people: Fagen, Becker, a lead guitarist, bass, piano, drums, 3 backup singers (they were great), Baritone sax, tenor/alto sax, trombone, and trumpet. As you would expect, the band was really tight, really talented.

Oh, if you haven't check out Classic Albums: Aja On DVD, definitely do. It shows Fagen and Becker at the control room console playing back and dissecting the album track by track, amongst interviews with the group. Awesome.
On another edit. Thanks... Can't Buy A Thrill also happens to be way up here in my CD collection. Coincidence????? ;0)

(4,590 posts)I was a total outcast in high school, band nerd, freak, stoner and their music seeped into my soul. Everything about their music made sense to me and helped me feel o.k. about being a misfit.
I've seen them about 4 times since then, starting with their regrouping as New York Rock and Soul Review in Cincinnati in 1991. Best show- 1996 Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA. A friend of mine who used to run a fan internet site called "Under the Banyan Trees" was friends with Don and Walt and had will-call tickets courtesy of Walter Becker, so we had the best seats in the house. My friend got to go backstage and hang.
Worst show- Dukes of September in San Antonio. Horrible, drunk audience and Donald was obviously not into it (and tells about what a shitty mood he was in during that particular show in his book, Eminent Hipsters).
Have fun.
