Joan Jett and the Blackhearts opened up this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony with a punk-inflected set, bolstered by some high-profile guests.
The singer, who wore a black leather jacket, began her set with the anthem "Bad Reputation," set against black & white pics of her flipping the bird. Once the song was done, she welcomed some surprising guests onstage Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and original Blackhearts bassist Gary Ryan for a snarling rendition of the Runaways' "Cherry Bomb."
For her next number, her hit cover of Tommy James and the Shondells' "Crimson & Clover," she welcomed a "friend of mine": Tommy James. And, because that's not enough, Miley Cyrus who inducted the rocker into the Hall chimed in on the refrain. (Cyrus would later tell a story about smoking weed with Jett in a hotel bathroom, deeming her "what a superwoman really should be."
Grohl had words of praise for Jett last year, when she helped him out for his induction. "She's everything that Nirvana stood for," Grohl said of Joan Jett in 2014, after Ms. "Bad Reputation" herself joined him and Nirvana-mate Krist Novoselic for a blast through "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at last year's induction. "She's a powerful, rebellious, musical force of nature. We couldn't think of anyone better to join us." Grohl previously co-wrote "Any Weather" with Jett for her 2013 album Unvarnished.

She was. . .the first major female artist to start her own record label, and that was only because thousands of other labels said that there wasn't a market for that kind of music. And Kenny Laguna, I want to say something to you. I want to say that you're a fucking genius and this is why: Because when 23 record labels were saying that you started Blackheart Records together with Joan, by the way using his daughter's college savings, selling records out of the back of your Cadillac, and it takes someone like you that believes in the music but, more than that, believes in us as people, as human beings. You two are an unconditional kind of love. What you guys have is what all of us should look for in the people that we spend our lives and our valuable time on the Earth with. People in this room are probably married to people they love less than you guys love each other.
I'm also honored to induct the Blackhearts tonight. Why don't we bring everyone up right now.

(18,837 posts)Some people see the Runaways' creator, the late Kim Fowley, as a "visionary"...I saw him as a huckster, a scam artist, a bottom feeder trying to come up with a way to fleece the lowest common denominator while laughing all the way to the bank (much like the Sex Pistols' Malcom McLaren).
The intention from the beginning was "jailbait girl group," and he played it to the hilt. A lot of that toned down when Cherie Currie left the band and they became a straight-ahead rock band. Sex was still a part of it but not as slimy as when they were turning out songs like "Cherry Bomb."
As Kim Fowley put it himself, " There was a lot of naïveté, a lot of mis-communication, one too many blow ups. One too many whatevers. It boiled down to them basically quitting me." (http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2012/02/16/is-this-the-last-kim-fowley-interview-ever/)
The Runaways provided visibility for Joan, but her solo career has been 100% on her terms, free of the objectification that was determined necessary to get the Runaways into record store bins.
