In 2001, Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs.
This year, Nelson Cruz of the Mariners is projected to hit 100.

(62,415 posts)Babe Ruth probably has the most incredible home run numbers. Can't remember which year, but I believe one year Ruth hit more home runs himself than the rest of the American League combined.
Maris was a great ballplayer but was greatly aided by expansion and hitting in front of Mickey Mantle. Mantle hit 54 that year IIRC. Norm Cash (who?) also had a monster year that year for Detroit.
But when the homers started flying out like a slow pitch softball game, that was it for me. When Brady Anderson hit 50 it was time to look for another game to watch. But the fans like them dingers.

(9,527 posts)does anybody really actually consider that cheating cowardly piece of garbage to actually hold the record?
I would be open to an immediate lifetime ban for players who test positive for performance enhancing drugs. But they at least need to be banned for multiple seasons like athletes are in international sports. Start tossing drug abusers like Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz (somehow Red Sox fans never seem to mention him when they complain about Rodriguez) out of the game.
