take a closeup picture of the throttle linkage on the carburetor before disassembly. It can be difficult to remember how it goes back together.

And that is a memory that I have not recalled in decades.

By the time I had a yard, I had an electric mower, so that I didn't have to fuss with a carburetor.

I use this to get the carburetor ungummed
http://seafoamsales.com/sea-foam-motor-treatment/
and this stuff to keep the gas from degrading
http://lucasoil.com/products/fuel-treatments/safeguard-ethanol-fuel-conditioner-with-stabilizers

works for me
if it is really bad and you can't get the engine started
drain the gas tank and put some straight seafoam in there… turn over the engine to get the seafoam into the carb passages and let it sit for an hour. put just enough gas in the tank to start the engine and give it a try… repeat if it won't start.

the lucas crap keeps gas good even over the winter and makes the ethanol fuels usable instead of a pain in the ass

cheers
