The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI fixed the gummed up carburetor on my lawn mower.
A guy knocked on my door this evening and said he'd mow my lawn for $20. That solved the gummed up carburetor problem. He did a good job at a good price. I told him he could do it twice a month at that price if he wanted the work. He accepted.
I may give him our old lawn mower as a bonus at the end of the season. I bet he'll know what to do with it.

(16,178 posts)he returns and begins cutting only to knock on the door and tell you he needs $20.00 to get some gas and a sandwich and after you give it to him he's gone for good.

(5,364 posts)I could not un-gum my lawnmower's carb with all the solvents and compressed air. It's a one-piece plastic unit and though I got the internal passages unplugged, the priming check-valve was no doubt stuck, causing it not to be able to suck fuel from the tank.
I got tired of trying to mow my lawn with an electric weed whacker, and sprung the 30 bucks for a new carb. Though chided/ribbed by a girlfriend for being cheap ( by not buying a complete new mower ) the new unit makes the engine run great. I used this down time to also sharpen the blade, which really helped too.
What got me was that in 15 years of owning this mower, and draining or preserving ( with Stay-bil ) the fuel at the end of the mowing season, this was the first year I actually had trouble.
No way I could swing 35 dollars ( the going rate around here ) a mow every 5-6 days.

(39,343 posts)Now, that's the way to go. You've now got a yard guy and no mower should you decide you want to do it.
Crack a cold one and enjoy the rest of your day, Cheers!
