Glass Tax



Taxes on glass in the 18th century were so steep that many people bricked up their windows. When people planned to emigrate to America, they were counseled to bring windows with them, as once they crossed over, windows were simply unavailable at any price. Wealthy people who did have windows would remove them for safe-keeping if they planned to travel for any length of time.
