My Computer survived so much, even being on the streets with me. But it took one College kid to destroy it! He said his was on the frits and need to finish a paper. So I let him come over to use mine. Went to check mail and came back to an abolished screen and some sort of liquid pored on it. He said he knocked it of an the screen stated smoking and he pored soda on it to put it out!
So I am sad to report that I am shopping for a new computer.
There are so many choses out there. I don't know where to start. thinking of the surface but there are some others I an looking at to.
Any suggestions?

(131,077 posts)I just went through something ?like that,? my few years old computer, which had been rehabbed by a nerd friend, died last week. My friend gave me his 'beloved' Lenovo so I could take it with me, and he's looking for one for himself.
I know NOTHING but this is Lenovo, and seems to work. It's a lot lighter than my 'old' HP.
Good luck.

(14,120 posts)I am not big on games save for stuff like you see on Facebook. And on line all I really do is Facebook, DU, YouTube and read news. My big thing is memory.

(18,482 posts)Most folks are okay with 4 - 8 gigabytes of RAM. I'd pick something with an intel i5 cpu.
The Gateway is a fine choice.
Here's a Lenovo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834318466
...that's comparable to the Gateway you mentioned.
The choice is yours.

(14,120 posts)15.6" screen, real nice!
discntnt_irny_srcsm
(18,482 posts)The gateway does have a touch screen and the lenovo does not.
Not sure if that matters to you.

(14,120 posts)Just thinking about when I am out around the pool area and one of the locale Chihuahua decide to jump up and touch there nose to the screen. Hate for them to order like a 100 tennis ratchets on ebay.

(8,217 posts)Unless you need it for anything beyond surfing, simple video watching and word processing, you don't need that much power.
Perks cost extra, such as:
-Macs
-Laptops in particular lightness, screen and good looks
I don't even game, but I invested on a decent machine, with many many USB HDs, since I play around with photoshop.

And maybe next time have the College Kid use a typewriter instead I'd certainly never let the likes of that one near a 'real' computer

A few years ago I discovered refurb and will never look back
I replaced by computer for about $125.00 from Newegg
It has everything I need. I can even watch high quality movies and sports with no lag
Check out Tiger Direct and ebay too, for comparisons

(30,252 posts)Make sure you get Windows 7, no matter what model you buy. Your sanity will thank you.

(14,120 posts)Yes, they are buying me the new system. It is a good thing I had a external hard drive to back up everything.

(14,120 posts)With the external hard drive I already have and the Parent are paying for the software. It is perfect for me. I can even use it at my job instead of the laptop they have lent me since Phoenix ( the name of my late computer) went splat.
