You were a DUZY in a category of your own.
"A small bout of fatal cancer," indeed. I guess you forgot to take those two aspirin and call the doc in the morning, eh?
RIP to a man I never met, but was a friend all the same, and not just to me by any stretch.
Nance, we are SO sorry for your loss. I can't begin to imagine what this must have meant for you..............

Jeff and Nance chose to let his passing be known as they saw fit, and I respect their decision not to make his illness a public event. Each victim of a fatal disease certainly has a right to confront it in their own way. Whether or not to go public with it is their decision and theirs alone.
For the record, I didn't know Jeff was ill either, just saw Nance's post on Facebook. For that matter, I don't even know if she is cool with my having posted on the board (guess I should have asked before posting--Nance, please forgive me if I acted in haste)*, but I know Jeff had enough friends on DU that plenty of people here would want to know and say something. For those in contact with Nance, I'm sure she will be glad to read all communication of condolence and encouragement. We all know how tough and gutsy she is, but this can't be an easy time for her. None of us are made of titanium.
*late edit: I later got a note from her saying she was going to ask me to post something, but she heard that I already had.

(102,358 posts)be concerned about them and react with public sorrow when something happens to them. I do believe asking questions about it is likewise a natural reaction to the shock of hearing the news. I certainly meant no disrespect.
My deepest condolences to Nance and (the undoubtedly many) JeffR friends, colleagues and family.

(28,501 posts)I was friends with Jeff on facebook but I'm not with Nance. So I wouldn't have known otherwise, until one day I'd cruise over to his page just to see what was up because he hadn't posted in forever.

(54,436 posts)I post only seldom on my FB page, so one fine day, someone might remark in passing "that guy from Dallas hasn't posted in a while," and that'll be the end of it.
Being married to Nance meant there was no chance Jeff's passing would go unnoticed, and the well of wonderful sentiment that has shown up on the several threads speaks for itself.
One of the good ones. Enjoyed his posts.

(9,901 posts)JeffR, may your ancestors quickly guide you through the Southern Door.
I've always treasured my only DUzy, more so now.
When I think of DU, I invariably think of Jeff. It was a lovely, creative, and exciting time while he was here and he kept DU a funny place-in a good way-for longer than it might otherwise have been.
With tears I now say I miss my sweet brother more than I thought I would, or would ever have to.
Condolences Nance.

(27,818 posts)But tonight, I decided to take a quick look around. Imagine my surprise at seeing this thread resurface after almost two months since Jeff passed.
It's been difficult to adjust to the silence. We both worked from home, were together 24/7, and gabbed constantly about everything - politics, the news, the neighbourhood, our friends, books, movies. In our 22 plus years together, we just never shut up.
And the man made me laugh every day. His quick wit never failed - he had a one-liner for every situation. You know how funny he could be on DU - imagine what it was like living with a man who was that funny all the time.
One of his oft-spoken one-liners would come up when he read some ridiculous anti-Obama post on DU. He'd shake his head and say, "See, this is why I backed the Kurovski-Wetzelbill ticket - but did anyone listen to me? Oh, noooooo."
Thanks for your condolences, and your truly lovely words about Jeff. Wherever he is, I've no doubt he's read them/heard them, and is proud to count you among his friends.

(34,655 posts)It's going to be a long road for you, and at least Jeff was a person so large in spirit and so deeply gifted that we can be comforted somewhat by what he left us.
And if I can feel this way through something as distant as the internet, for you it is of course a veritable tsunami of both sorrow for the loss, and joy at the remembrance of that dearest of men.
And so, again with the tears. I regret having been absent from my online life, and Jeff's loss is the paper parasol in the Mai Mai of my regretting.
I have no idea why I just said that.
Love to you, Nance. And deepest condolences. How lucky it was that Jeff was ours for a time.
NanceGreggs
(27,818 posts)But even through the miles, I can feel your embrace nonetheless.
I often think these days of a line in "Moonstruck", where Cher is talking about her deceased husband: "Who knew that man was a gift I couldn't keep?"
Yeah, who knew?
But that gift was mine for twenty-two years - and for that I am grateful.
