(34,137 posts)They say are never seen!
Chinchillas - When I was a kid we had chinchillas as pets. A friend of my Dad's had been sold a pair to raise for their skins. He already raised rabbits for their meat and skins and thought chinchillas would be a good addition. In Florida with no air conditioning for their habitation chinchillas did not grow thick coats. So my Dad got the pair from him to be our pets. Then we found out the other problem with chinchillas - they will chew their way out of nearly any cage. They chewed through the 2x4" wooden frame of the cage Dad built, through the hardware cloth he wrapped the next 2x4" frame in, though the 1/8" thick sheet metal he wrapped the next frame in. Meanwhile, they made terrible pets - they bite and they are really hard to catch when they get loose. They had two babies while we had them - cute little guys that were slightly tamer than the parents. Eventually they got loose and disappeared into the swamp next door. Since no chinchillas were seen again, they were not a successful invasive species - though they would have been more entertaining Florida residents than the pythons in South Florida!
Snakes - We caught ring neck snake babies from that swamp next door. Cute little guys, very tame, easy pets. The biggest nuisance was catching crickets to feed them so usually after a few days we'd let them loose in the swamp.
Skunks - As a kid I'd go out back and play with the cute black and white kitties in the back field. Mom would come out to get me and call my name very softly - my "kitties" were spotted skunks. The babies were very friendly and I was small and quiet enough that the parents never got agitated. A few years later when I'd started school I came home one afternoon to a terrible smell. One of the skunks had gotten into the garbage can and was trapped. Mom had called all the vets in town to see if they would de-scent it so I could have it as a pet, but they wanted nothing to do with it. The skunk got upset when Dad tipped the can over to release it - but Dad used a long pole so he didn't get squirted. The smell lingered for a while but the skunks moved away after that.
Armadillos - Plenty of them, adult and babies, around. The babies look just like miniature adults so if they aren't with their parents, you can't tell the size. They are just as cute as they can be!
Hamsters, guinea pigs and rats - Friends have had those over the years and often ended up with unintended babies.
Hedgehogs - LOTS of baby hedgehogs on the internet - where have these guys been?

(12,904 posts)There was a chinchilla there. He was sitting on the coffee table, smoking a cigarette.
True story.

(53,987 posts)The baby hamster is likely not a baby, but at least two to three weeks old. Baby hamsters are like hairless peanuts. I guess it depends on the flexibility of the word though.
If someone wants to see an UGLY baby, try the baby Gouldian finch. Holy shit, that thing looks like it is from a different planet!

(26,603 posts)We see ducklings a lot, but despite the ubiquity of coots I don't see the chicks that often...

(14,920 posts)I noticed that the baby pigeons in the link didn't really resemble adult pigeons, but oddly enough strongly show the genetic link between pigeons and the extinct dodo bird.

(45,850 posts)I live urban but last summer there was a squirrel raiding a suet block I had out for birds and just as I was about to chase her off she flipped around and she had about 10 swollen teats, so I sighed and left her alone -figured she needed the extra calories

(46,081 posts)Did you see how tiny that snake was? I got a baby corn snake once, and he wasn't much bigger than a worm, but the pattern was perfect.
I still have him fourteen years later. He's sitting in a cage right next to me as I type.
