The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHeard a country song yesterday that was horrible.
But I repeat myself...
The lyrics were something about the protagonist's father having fought (and maybe died?) in Viet Nam, while the protagonist himself would be proud to take up arms to defend the homeland.
I only caught about half of it, and it was as nauseatingly pandering and jingoistic as anything I've ever heard.
Yes, yes. Somewhere there's country music that doesn't suck. But this particular song--and most of what you're likely to hear anymore--is so awful that I want to travel back in time to prevent the invention of the radio.

(30,761 posts)strictly for the money.
Real country expresses feelings and emotions felt by ordinary people. "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." "I Fall to Pieces."
This new stuff is crap. I won't listen to it.
Stick with the blues. So far, they haven't sold out.

(9,350 posts)I did a google search and I think the song you are talking about is called Kiss My Country Ass. The lyrics of this song sound like those of the song you were talking about.

(29,414 posts)I thought maybe WFMU might have a country show, but it doesn't look like it. Plenty of folk-music shows, even for "acid folk" whatever that is
And there's always Boot Liquor on soma fm:
Americana Roots music for Cowhands, Cowpokes and Cowtippers
Music that showcases the ongoing hopelessness in your otherwise dreary life. Americana roots music (or what they used to call Country Western) at its core, stuff that's both musically and lyrically unique. Consider it a musical intervention for your bedraggled soul.

(4,138 posts)Roadhouse is a grab bag of all sorts of American roots music - blues, folk, bluegrass, Cajun, country and so on.
Swingin' Doors is more focused - usually it's about half classic country from the 50s-60s and half contemporary Americana
Neither one plays the jingoistic arena rock that passes for commercial country these days.
