The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm going to say something here I never thought I'd say.
I am now 60 years old, and I'm still alive.
Not a particularly uncommon condition to find oneself in, from what I hear, but for me it's an amazing achievement. I've lived a somewhat unsettled life, coming close to the edge of the cliff on a few occasions. I've done a lot of stupid things over the years, and I honestly never thought I'd make it to this milestone.
But, crippled and wrecked, here I am! After failing to drink myself to death, after surviving eight major surgeries over 18 years in a failed attempt to repair a failing body, after having a complete mental and physical collapse five years ago that should have finished the job- after all this and much, much more, I still find myself waking up each morning and finding I have an excuse to get out of bed and just DO stuff.
My excuse?? I'm only 60 years old, and I'm still alive.
Here's hoping you are too.

(130,974 posts)I'm somewhat similarly situated, that is, over 60 and still alive. (70, with none of the trials and tribulations you describe.)
2 LITTLE grandsons, granddaughter on the way, so STILL moving along!

The most stressful age? Mid-thirties!

I've had several very close DU friends die recently, and I don't think I could handle another one.
So, keep on getting out of bed and doing stuff! It's a wonderful place to be...

(46,436 posts)Having been in my 60s for almost nine years now, I've been kind of surprised at how much fun I'm having. The freebies, in particular, are great. Free fishing license, senior property tax exemption...we'll never have to register our truck again. Cheap movies. Really, getting old is great.

(2,760 posts)Like you, I've put my body through a lot, not medical, but accidents and muggings. Numerous broken bones, punctured lung, smashed nose up in my head, you get the picture, and I'm still around to tell the tale with over a decade on you.
Keep up the good work. Stay alive and enjoy every second. It sure beats all the other options.

(54,405 posts)I hit 63 earlier this year. Mother Nature had me slated to check out on or about April 29, 2004, and it's not nice to fool Mother Nature (or so the ads used to say). But I hit her Snooze button, and am still around to tell the tale.
I might be around for another 30 years or maybe another 30 minutes. NO idea. But it isn't worth 30 seconds of the time I have left to worry about it.
Like you said, get out of bed, and go enjoy what's out there while you can.
Like Warren Zevon once sang, "I'll sleep when I'm dead," which, come to think of it, he now is.

(19,537 posts)I've got four more years to achieve your goal of hitting 60, where I no longer have to pay 10% penalties on taking out money from my 401k and IRA funds like I did last year, and will have to do this coming year.
And hopefully, I can fight through sleep apnea that I had some preliminary diagnosis of having a week ago today, that a few days later took the life of one of our good DUers here this last week too. Hoping that my dropping a second job I did last night will help me through that, and hopefully I'll have enough energy to go to more election action group meetings and also additional work that I spent yesterday on for Bernie Sanders.
Your fight through your challenges is giving me a four year goal to fight through mine, and hopefully in that time we'll have a changed government that will help all of us do so too, and I can be a part of that change!
And a good happy birthday to my young friend as well, who probably doesn't frequent this board, but who I want to see have a good lifetime ahead of her to not find it tainted by what appears to be so much problems ahead of us that we need to get rid of now.

(41,986 posts)I'm 60 too, and it's been one of the hardest years of my life. Three deaths of people I love, one cardiac bypass for Mr. Bear, and as soon as I decided to finally take the leap and close my therapy practice for a couple of years and devote myself to my writing career my body started going bonkers, arthritis and sciatica making sitting at the computer for lengths of time very hard.
But dammit, I'm still here too! And it's hard but not impossible. Here's to finding a way to live, and live well.
Here's to all us human beings, fragile and wonderful things that we are. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
