(2,338 posts)I had that happen once. Got up one morning, went downstairs and found a raccoon drinking out of the cat's water fountain. We both freaked out and ran separate directions. Fortunately, she ran back outside.

(81,304 posts)But none of them got inside to do this. Of course, by then, we had all-indoor cats. But before that - when we left a bowl of cat kibble outside, the raccoons had some, too. We once had an apricot tree. I went out to pick some of the apricots around dusk one day - tree was so loaded they were littering the ground - and spotted one right there at the tree. I wasn't spooked, and neither was he. We sort of acknowledged each other and then went to opposite sides of the tree and got to work! I'd pick and put 'em in my grocery bag. He'd pick and put 'em in his mouth. It was amazing! He finished when I did and then we both went our separate ways. But it went on like that for about 10 minutes!

(35,680 posts)I used to stay up late at night reading thrillers. This was back when I stored the dry kitty food in the front entry way, off the living room. The raccoon would actually knock on the door at 2 or 3 a.m., trying to get me to open the door. The funny part is that the next morning I could see the sequence of events, all based on his muddy paws.
He would stand up on his rear legs, looking at me through the French doors. Then he would go knock on the door.
I would be scared to death!
Then the next morning I would laugh my head off, seeing who the "murderer" was.

(81,304 posts)Those little paws are really something else, aren't they! There was a family of three living in the little mini "woods" behind our house, and they'd waddle over to our back yard probably for the extra cat kibble. We started watching. Then we started watching while not concealed. They got used to seeing us. There came one point where we tried giving one of them some food. The mom got so used to us that she'd lumber up the back steps and actually reach out and take some kibble with her front paws, while standing up on her hind feet. It felt so odd - those little "fingers" pulling across my fingers, grabbing the kibble. We left a bowl of water outside, too. And sure enough, if they had food, they often washed it off in the bowl of water. FASCINATING behaviors to watch. Just totally enthralling!!!

(2,338 posts)The water fountain incident came a few summers ago. Long story short, I was sitting outside reading late one night when I saw a what I thought was my grey tabby cat's tail float by me. I wondered how she got outside. Turned out to be a raccoon. I made the mistake of sharing my peanut butter sandwich and for the rest of the summer I was going through so much peanut butter for the THREE raccoons that came for nightly visits. We have a screened porch and I would frequently leave the sliding glass door open a bit so the cats could go out there. One of them (Lovey) chewed through part of the screen and helped herself to cat food and water.
Two of them would take sandwich pieces directly from my hands and would reach up and press on my legs if I wasn't fast enough with the next bite. They left over the winter and never came back. Maybe that's a good thing. I was going broke.
