I personally hate it but now most HR departments pay close attention to your profile there. It's also a tool recruiters use a great deal...which is a mixed blessing I guess.

If you do create a profile there consider it like you would a resume.

People change jobs so often in the Valley that business cards become obsolete very quickly. Enter LinkedIn.

but I get at least 1 or 2 emails from head hunters/recruiters a week. Helps me keep up on what is going on in the market place plus there are some really great networking groups you can join. I have a free account- they have promotional offers to get the upgraded account but so far I've not seen the need.
