my city has lost a wonderful man
He was a local celebrity the "angel of Old Town" with a generous spirit and devotion to his community.
And that's how he'll be remembered.
Barney Apodaca, a beloved Fort Collins resident, died Monday morning after catching pneumonia. He was 73.
"He was really a community gem," said Amanda Miller, who struck up a friendship with Apodaca while she was working at the Downtown Business Association. Apodaca would come in for lunch and keep DBA staff company during downtown events, she said.

barney has always been part of my memory. i remember always talking to him when we were in old town from the time i was small, i remember he was always talking about going to disneyland, i remember how he'd put out his hand for a high five and pull it away at the last minute, saying "psych!" and i remember his fundraising work. but what i will remember most is the brightness of his smile and the bigness of his heart.
rest easy, my friend. you left this world a better place than you found it.
