It was its favorite fashion statement. In the 1950s, my dad was transferred by the Air Force to Bitburg, Germany. The Air Force base housing was surrounded by German farms. During planting season there were piles of fertilizer in the fields consisting of manure. If I gave my dog (a weimaraner) a bath, when it got out of the apartment it would head straight for a pile of manure and roll around until it was wearing it like a coat. It looked very happy. I think hunting dogs instinctively love manure because it hides their true scent from potential game.
