I was going to visit family this weekend but a relative passed away so some of them were going to the funeral but that was too long of a drive for me.
So as a whim I rented the movie. I will admit I did read the first book, which I found awfully written. So I rented the movie from Redbox. I didn't even waste the extra money on the Blu-Ray.
First wasn't Christian Grey suppose to have red hair and blue eyes? That was a huge change.
The movie was so wretched acted that I spent the first 30 minutes playing Beleaguered Castle Solitaire on my IPad then I think I soon fell asleep. I woke up in the last 15 minutes which he did something that would be considered domestic violence but since he's a billionaire I think we gals are supposed to like it. I found about erotic as scrubbing out my cat's litter box after I had ignored it for 3-4 days.
Now that I'm wide awake I can watch 'Still Alice' with Oscar winner Julianne Moore.

(60,010 posts)It was not even worth a guilty pleasure moment, plus it just up and STOPS. at the end.....which apparently the books did too, which is a very very bad trend of late.
First of all, NOT the least bit erotic unless you are 12 years old, but I somehow think even today's 12 year old would be more sophisticated than the film.
Speaking of 12 year olds, the male lead was almost that young, and very not interesting.
NO chemistry between the actors, none at all.
have not seen the reports on the box office figures.

(20,219 posts)If Christian Gray was poor and lived in a trailer park, it would just been an episode of Criminal Minds.

(95,337 posts)Honestly most of it is just bad but playful consensual sex. The stalking part is pretty darn creepy and the whole 'you will be mine'.
But what woman wants a man to control every aspect of her life. The last 15 really was domestic abuse. She wanted to know how bad it would get and he showed her. I think he could have hit her once and realized this was a bad idea but he works with safe words. But when you see a girl crying and trembling yet continue to hit her that is domestic violence. But the writer feels that since the man is a billionaire and the first 4 years of his childhood was fucked up that somehow this is ok and we women would think this is sexy. Ugh

(27,172 posts)Having the full attention of a man is attractive - even if the attention is harmful or scary.
It's sad wish fulfillment that a "normal" girl can have the full attention of an attractive billionaire who wants to educate her in sex.
And, she's not REALLY responsible for being "naughty" she's a helpless pawn of the powerful man, so she can just let go and enjoy it and not feel guilty for being a "bad" girl.

(95,337 posts)would drive me bonkers.
But it would make sense for her. I mean the girl in the book lost her father when she was a child (he died when she was just an infant) and her mother was married 4 times and at one point the girl was raised by a stepfather. So maybe she was pretty fucked up herself that she needed someone who would give her undivided attention after going unnoticed most of her life.

(27,172 posts)I have to confess I've not seen the movie, read the book, nor even read the "Twilight" saga from which it originally sprung.
It all seemed like juvenile twaddle to me, but if others find things that speak to them in it, then good for them.
Fan Fiction is mostly about wish-fulfillment, and I think "50 Shades" is probably more revelatory about the author than any real humanity in the characters (except maybe the heroine). As for the millions of women who gobbled it up - I guess it most shows how discouragingly far we are from eradicating the infantilization of women when it comes to sex.
Again, speaking as an armchair psychologist and someone who only knows the "gist" of the material involved.
