"SNIP...........
Like it or not, where you decide to live often says a lot about you.
Of course, you're not totally defined by your ZIP code, but a website spotted by Reddit seeks to show people what ZIP codes say about the demographics, culture, and lifestyle in one's area.
Here's how it works:
The "Zip Lookup" tool is powered by Esri, a geographic-information firm based in California.

(14,691 posts)it's just spitting out the known demographics. My zip code is very low in hipsters and that's a good thing.

I have some things in common with the description, other things not at all. It seems rather stereotyped as to how people are "supposed to" live in the country.

22% golden years
18% top tier
Not sure about the other 22%
I'd say we even fit into the "Professional Pride" section, though we're not constantly upgrading our home and spending a lot of time & money on projects.

(29,414 posts)ESRI is a just a tad bit more than simply that. But I guess if you're not in GIS work, you wouldn't know that. It's also spelled as I did because it's not a person's name!
As for the accuracy, I guess it is accurate for the demographics of the area, but not for me individually

(21,046 posts)My zip says "Rooted Rural" and "Diners and Miners" but my actual educational and cultural demographic is urban "Top Tier".
Which is why I have to hit the big city for culture or I'll go nuts.

(5,364 posts)Fairly accurate but with a little too much "pigeon holing" that puts or forces people into groups they really aren't quite in.
Like it's written by some yuppie-centric point of view.

(41,694 posts)Says mostly white collar yuppies that live in apartments, etc.
That's actually more the neighboring zip. Mine is still mainly working class homeowners. They're starting to yuppify the fringes of my zip but haven't really gotten into the core yet.
When the house next door went up for sale on of the first people to look at it had a red Mercedes SUV with California plates and my first thought was "FUCK, there goes the neighborhood"

(35,670 posts)Wow, this is really fascinating!
I think the description fits my community to a "T," especially since one segment of my zip code is called "Pleasantville" (the others are "Urban Chic" and "Exurbanites" . What amused me about "Pleasantville" is that I can never find my way around here, despite having lived here for 18 years.
Why?
Because so many streets have the word "pleasant" in them. There's Pleasant Valley Way, and Mt. Pleasant Avenue. And of course, the offshoots, like Pleasant Terrace and Mt. Pleasant Place. Then there are the sections of towns, one of which is known as the "Pleasantdale" section and the ensuing schools, which are all pleasant as hell, too.
Now this would probably not be a problem for anyone but an English major, but there is also an excess of streets with similarly upbeat names, like "Prospect." Prospect Avenue, Prospect Place, etc. The problem is that they all start with "P," and this mixes me up. I think, and even dream, in words. When people give me directions, I get all those "P's" mixed up, and the problem is exacerbated by the fact that most of them are major thoroughfares, too.

I make less that my zip's median income. no big surprise.
I'm almost 20 years older than my zip's median age. No big surprise.
"desert" level population density? um, ok. no enough "desert" for me, but whatevah!
Still waiting for the "creepily accurate" part....

(4,412 posts)the article didn't agree. I put in the zip that I work in and the zip I used to live and I thought it was a fair assessment.
