I saw him live several times, including a performance with a trio at Hungry Joe's, a jazz club in Huntington Beach, CA. Those were the days, as jazz clubs are now fewer and fewer. I had the privilege of sitting about five feet away from his Gibson ES 175 guitar as he played it. He had so much good taste and virtuosity.

For Joe Pass fans, here's a strange video showing him playing jazz on a solid body rock guitar, a Fender Jaguar. This might have been that period after he was incarcerated for heroin usage and then went to rehab, where the only guitar he had access to was a rock guitar. After he put his life back together and went straight, he came out blazing. In the latter part of his career, he did a lot of solo work, playing the guitar alone like a piano. He was a true monster of the instrument.

Your post is illuminating, and the music is wonderful. I agree with everything you say about Joe Pass.

The first video you posted is indeed strange. The guitar was in danger of being drowned out by the piano, especially at first. And I'm not used to seeing Joe Pass without his mustache.

I've gotten as far as the Gershwin medley in the second video. I'll have to come back for more.
